Later, in the afternoon classroom session, we were
asked to divide into groups and then go out and find one thing we all deemed
"good" and one thing we all deemed "bad." A sort of
philosophical scavenger hunt.
My group decided we could not possibly find anything
free of judgment. We knew this game was a set-up. No matter what we brought
back, it could be seen as either good or bad, depending on your choice of
perception. So we decided to go for a
walk and just enjoy that activity. When we went to put our shoes on, one
of the ladies in my group, Mary, discovered that someone had left her a pair of
shoes that looked like hers but which didn't fit her feet.
"Oh, gosh! That's bad!" Mary said. We all
laughed. But then Mary said, "Now I
can go barefoot, though, and that's good!" We all
laughed again. Mary looked inside the shoes and found a pack of
cigarettes. "This is bad," she said. But Carol, another group member,
likes to smoke and she said, "That's good!" We were all
cracking up by now. Mary then looked inside the pack of cigarettes and
found a ten-dollar bill. We all agreed that was good.
The shoe story became our good-bad item for
show-and-tell later. It illustrated how we judge events all day, and
automatically. What my group concluded is that life, and how you see it,
is your decision. The sun shining is just the sun shining. A farmer may
see it as good or bad depending on his needs. If he wants rain for his crops,
the sunshine is bad. Still, the sun just shines.
Can we lead our lives free of judgment? Just
flowing? Bears said, "Happiness is
as easy as breathing."
Then why do we even have unhappiness? Bears says
there are three main reasons:
1. We use it to motivate ourselves or others.
2. We use it as a sign of our sensitivity and caring.
3. We use it as a threat.
"Unhappiness," Bears said, "is the
Queen of our culture."
