We Saved The Fox

The Fox Theatre is an Atlanta icon.  A proud exception to Atlanta’s glass and steel structures, The Fabulous Fox is a 200,000 square foot performing arts center of Moorish Arabic design, which is beloved by all Atlantans.  Once threatened by demolition, this National Historic Landmark was saved.  This is the story of how and why the Fox was saved, to become the most successful performing arts center of its size in America.

A former Marine, Joe Myers practiced law in Atlanta for 32 years as a commercial real estate attorney with Alston & Bird, one of the largest law firms in the southeast.  Specializing in historic preservation and urban development law, Mr. Myers represented the Fox Theatre for twenty-six years, and also served, until his retirement in 2001, as vice president, trustee and executive committee member of its owner, Atlanta Landmarks, Inc.  A former director of the Atlanta Preservation Center, Mr. Myers also represented tax exempt, non-profit corporations which were the main development arms in rebuilding Atlanta’s inner city.
