It didn’t seem possible that my home, the quiet sleepy village of Essex in the hinterlands of England, should be the center of horrible crimes and thievery. I must tell you I wouldn’t have been disappointed or surprised if it had been one sensational murder.
Or if it had been a single international scandal over the robbery of an infamous jewel, after all such things happen by chance, and they would have delighted me for I was always looking for exciting new plotlines for my books. But, two ghastly murders in Egypt, three in Essex, and three thefts of the same infamous stone, the first from a private collection, one at the soiree, and one from the Inspector, even I couldn’t have come up with so much mayhem from my own fertile imagination. I would have thought it laughable and way overdone if it had occurred in some other writer’s plotline, but the trouble was I was witness to it all, and so were all the others that were in the British Party in Egypt ten years ago, with the addition of some new Essex faces.
I ask you, wouldn’t you feel as though you were cursed and be a little nervous that you were on the scene and privy to all that took place, you a lone woman and a widow to boot living out in the boondocks of the district?
Of course, I had the redoubtable reputation in the village as a curious, adventurous sort of soul.

If you love crossword puzzles, cunning challenges, reading about other times and other places, pitting your little gray cells against those of a murderer and thief, then you have come to the right place. We dare you to figure it out before the Inspector confronts the culprit or before the Titanic sails.
