DESIGN IT! 

Know the product you want to design and make sure it’s original.  Only original ideas can be patent.  Know what type of format you want to use such as, two-dimensional or three-dimensional.  It’s a good idea to do a sketch first.  And this is very important!  Write down your idea in a journal and have a friend or relative witness it. This way you will have proof of the design and the date it was created.  Remember, a patent drawing is different when applying for an application.  On a patent drawing they use FIG 1, FIG 2, etc., and each area of the drawing is numbered.  If your drawing is 2D, make sure it’s a technical illustration when applying for a patent; you do not have to be artistic.  In other words, the drawing does not have to be stylist but they do have to be accurate.  The same goes for a 3D drawing.  The patent examiner requires a formal drawing when submitting an application.  It is OK to submit an informal drawing but, when the application is approved, you must submit a formal drawing.  In illustration1.1 shows an example of a formal patent drawing.  Informal drawings must be accurate and detailed too.  The formal drawings must show the same details as the informal drawing.  The patent examiner does not allow additional information (new matter) added to an application that has already been summated.  If you need to add new matter, file a continuation application.  All new matters will not get the original filing date.  If your informal drawing is rejected by the patent examiner because it’s not clear enough to understand, you cannot correct it on the formal drawing later because all information has to show the same as the informal drawing.  Remember also, when submitting a drawing that engineering drawing is different from patent drawing standards.  The drawing must demonstrate the inventors’ skill and the pertinent detail to the manufacturer engineers how to make and use the product.  So, plan your drawings carefully.
