John hotboxed his cigarette and while doing so he
snapped his fingers ten times in quick succession.
There was no music except for the favorite tunes
that John might have been able to play at will inside his head.
"It appears as if you're enjoying yourself,"
I said.
"How very perceptive." He quit hotboxing
the cigarette. "You really don't
have to stay here, Lester. Miami is a very nice place to stay. Nice weather, plenty of women, everything
you want. Think about it."
"Well, maybe. What it is right now is that I've
been trying to get over a son of a bitch of a problem."
"Tell me about it, dude. I'll keep it a
secret."
I raised my eyebrows. "You really want to
know?"
"I think so. It won't hurt me."
"Okay. My girlfriend blew her brains out."
"Oh shit.
Did she do it recently?"
"She sure did and I've been trying like hell to
deal with it."
"I'm so sorry, man. Is there anything I can
do?"
"Be my friend."
"Already taken care of. Come to Florida and
I'll get you a job at my place. You can
write books while you're there too."
"It might be a good place. The weather down
there's supposed to be nice like you said.
The place is a writer's paradise. I'll think about it but I still might
screw up and have to pay fines."
"If you get in trouble I'll take of everything
for you, amigo."
"The food's coming, John. I smell it."
"I'm glad you smell it. How does Miami sound to you?"
"Don't know because I've never been
there." I giggled. "Just
fine, John. I want to go."
"First things first. Have you forgotten something?"
"Why don't you tell me? Please do."
"It's something you'll probably like. Something
called fried chicken. Of course they include cole slaw, mashed potatoes with
gravy, and rolls along with the iced tea."
"Far out. I wish they'd bring the T.V. and quit
moving like they have hemorrhoids."
"What station tonight, friend? There's supposed to be a World War Two movie
coming on channel 47."
"The cable news first and then the movie. Deal?"
"Of course.
You want my tea tonight? I'm drinking water because my father had
diabetes and went into a diabetic coma. I can tell you a story about him if you
wish. Do you?"
"Some other time. I guess you want to watch your sugar."
"Right," Johns said.
"I'm inclined to be jumpy in my conversations
sometimes." I waited to see if what I'd just said would elicit a comment
but none came from him. "What
about the chicken, John?"
"I don't know. What about it?"

About the Book
“Bourbon on the Rocks” is a short story book with
four tales which I had to write because I felt no one lese would. The first one explores the futuristic
version of a modern-day problem, the second one is what could be called an
“escape”, the third offers a new way to look at crime, and the fourth one tells
of a man’s chance to recover what he’s lost.
The very act of keeping the stories in my head meant
that someday they needed to be released or else my head would not be able to
contain them anymore.
The concepts explored in “Bourbon on the Rocks” are
explored by me and, however outlandish they may seem, were real in my
nightmares and dreams.
About the Author
Mr. Carlton Gordy’s previously published poem...“One
Man’s Decision”...was recently included in a collection of poetry. He graduated from Long Ridge Writer’s Group
and completed the Writer’s Digest Novel Writing Workshop course. He’s had some short stories published in
newsletters but remembers an essay he wrote in the sixth grade regarding how
great his country was and why. Since it
was required as part of his English course he says that he got “hooked” on
writing from that moment on.
