“As it turns out, I have a plan.” Brigs said with aplomb.
Sandy turned to Parks. “You’ll
learn to hate when he says things like that.”
“Does this feeling of impending
doom ever go away?” Parks smiled back at Sandy.
Sandy laughed. “It hasn’t yet.”
Brigs ignored the jibes and went
on with his plan. The other three got serious and offered their input. Brigs
was concerned that they were leaving the rear of their army vulnerable to the
force of Stalkers, still keeping a low profile at the camp.
“We can make sure they don’t
cause any trouble.” Brigs said in conclusion.
“Four of us, against two hundred
Stalkers.” Sandy observed. “Sounds a little uneven.”
“I guess we could tell them to
find a couple more guys.” Brigs said with his usual confidence.
The four men startled at a noise
in the woods and took up defensive positions in the trees. Weapons drawn, they
waited to identify the threat. Three New Order soldiers approached their fire.
Sandy, Lemons and Parks came out of the trees.
The last one in line spoke.
“You’d all be dead if we were piggies.”
A pistol was suddenly placed
under his ear from behind. “Then again, maybe not.” Brigs said sarcastically as
he returned his weapon to its holster.
The leader was flustered but
began to speak. “I’m Captain Daniel Warren, Michael Windsor left me in charge.
I carry his orders.” He held out a piece of paper.
“Where is he?” Lemons asked
suspiciously, as he took the paper and read it.
“I don’t know, he left to take
care of something, said he would rejoin us quickly. I expected him back by
now.” The Captain said without pausing. “I have instructions for our movement.”
“Where are the others?” Brigs
asked.
“A mile back, that’s where we’re
going to assemble.” Daniel Warren indicated with his thumb, pointing behind
him, and over his shoulder.
Brigs informed the Captain of the
timeframe for the soldiers in the camps to arrive. They discussed their mutual
unease at the reports the Federals were putting out. It concluded with Brigs
talking about leaving their back vulnerable to the Stalkers.
“Michael’s orders were vague,
reassemble and move west, that was about it.” The Captain confided. “Although I
expect him back at any time, we may have to plan this on our own.”
“This isn’t going to be easy.”
Brigs nodded at the Captain.
“That’s why, if Michael isn’t
back by the time we’re all back together, I would like all of you to meet with
me, and the other commanders, to form a plan of action.” He said honestly.
“We’ll do what we can. I have a
few ideas.” Brigs agreed, with a noticeable sparkle in his eye.
“Funny thing, I’m getting that
feeling of doom again.” Parks said quietly to Sandy.
