Prologue
By the time Rachael Singer
was eight, she had decided to pursue a career that matched her last name. Born of well-to-do parents, she might very
well have succeeded. However, she was
born in the wrong place at the wrong time and in the wrong faith.
Rachael’s dark, wide eyes,
as well as her high cheekbones, were a gift from Anna, her mother, a well-known
and respected pediatrician. Her nose,
on the other hand, was another story.
That was a gift from Franz-Josef, her father. It wasn’t large, but it had a distinctive downward curve that
generations of Singers had passed along from parent to child. And someone in the generations of Singers –
or her mother’s side, Rheinmarks – must have come from Northern Europe, because
Rachael’s hair was almost, but not quite blond,- which was rare for a German
Jew born in 1926.
A studious child, Rachael loved to read. She never cared much for dolls or other
toys. Her parents never ceased to be
surprised by her excitement with all the mechanical and electrical equipment in
the basement of their home. Franz was a
physicist and loved to tinker and experiment in his spare time, and the little
time he had to spare for his daughter was spent mostly in his basement laboratory. It was there that she loved to be. That was almost the only place she could
have her father to herself.
By age 13, Rachael really hated her nose. It was this feature that set her apart and
classified her as being Jewish. She
wished there were a way to fix it so that she would be less despised, but in
1939, the technology and the expense prevented such a miracle. She even tried binding up her nose at night,
hoping this would straighten, or at least shrink it, but to no avail. It wasn’t until after she turned 19, no
longer had an interest in becoming a singer, and had the necessary funds to
afford plastic surgery that she finally came to peace with the way she
looked. And though the technology was
now widely available, she didn’t have the time – she had too many other things
on her mind in the year 2000.

About the Book
What happened to Franz-Josef Singer? A brilliant student and colleague of Albert
Einstein, his name, along with that of his wife, disappeared from history
during the final war-torn weeks of World War II.
While working with Dr. Einstein on applications of
his Relativity Theory, Franz-Josef’s interest turned to the possibility of time
travel into the future, an application that Einstein acknowledged as possible

developed a diabolical plot to turn his invention to their own use.
Discovering their plan and realizing that the Nazis
will never let him go, Franz decides that there is only one hope to protect
society from the terrible future his invention has made possible. Knowing he will never see her again--he sends
his nineteen-year-old daughter, Rachael, ahead...to the 21st century.
