“Who is this that cometh out
of the wilderness. . .?”
Song 3:6a
When Love enters our lives, change follows. Most are of the heart and discerned only by
those closest to us, but others are reflected in the light of our eyes and the
softening of our countenance. Friends
and acquaintances often ask, “You seem different. What’s happened to you?”
A group of young women called the “friends” or the
“daughters of Jerusalem” in the Song are asking that question in this passage.
They’re not strangers to the maiden. In
the first chapter, they rejoiced with her when the King chose her to come to
His chambers. But now, after only a
brief time with the Beloved, they do not recognize her. She has changed!
“Who is this who comes from the wilderness,” they ask?
The wilderness is a dry and empty place seemingly
void of the Bridegroom’s presence. It
is a place of choices, a place of transition.
As intolerable as their existence was at the cruel
hand of the Egyptian Pharaoh, the Israelites were unprepared for the
wilderness. Their constant complaints
were a stench in God’s nostrils. And
despite the miracles they experienced again and again, they chose to forget or
ignore them in their times of need.
But for Moses’ intercession, God would have
destroyed them. Instead He loved them.
He fed them, healed them and protected them from themselves and their enemies
while they wandered in the desert for forty years.
Jesus, too, had a wilderness experience. But because He believed instead of doubted
and never forgot the source of His strength; He spent only forty days in His
dry place. Emerging triumphantly and
with eager anticipation, He moved onto the road ahead of Him.
You and I face the same options, my friend. Will we stubbornly clutch garlic and leeks
to our breast; or will we allow our wilderness experiences to bend us, mold us
and enhance us with the glory of our King?
Will we grudgingly endure forty years of barrenness or willingly spend
forty days in an arid place that we may one day hear, “Who is this who comes from the wilderness?”

About the Book
LOVE NOTES is an inspirational allegory. It speaks of choices and salvation,
discipleship and victory. Its roots
spring from the Song of Solomon. Its
message echoes from the heart of God.
Short simple illustrations describe the love relationship
that evolves between the Beloved and his maiden – between Jesus Christ and His
Bride the Church. The parable begins as
the maiden becomes aware of her need for the Beloved. It ends with the glorious coming of her Bridegroom.
The Biblical truths found within its pages minister
to new believers and remind the more mature of God’s eternal love. Through LOVE NOTES the reader is
encouraged to empathize with the maiden’s challenge and share her spiritual
journey.
About the Author
Nancy Berwick loves to share God’s Word. She has
been a Bible teacher for more than 25 years and a guest speaker at various
women’s groups. While leading a weekly Bible study, the Song of Solomon took
hold of her heart. LOVE NOTES
is the result.
She began writing as a child. Her articles have appeared in both secular
and Christian markets. She co-authored
a book relating the history of a 150-year-old church near her home. Several years later, she wrote a book about
the church she attended while living in Florida and how the miraculous touch of
God had changed the lives of many of its members.
Today, Nancy lives with her husband, Chuck in
Mooresville, Indiana. They have two sons, three grandchildren and three
great-grandchildren.
