Five Years after the fall
“ Mama! Papa!” Curtis screamed “ Something is after me? ” he
cried.
Downstairs preparing to go to the market, Hannah Louise
looked for her purse. Suddenly she heard a knocking sound. “ Is it windy outside? It must be.” She dismissed the noise thinking that maybe
the wind was blowing the tree branches against the roof, again.
Opening the door, she was surprised to find that there was
no wind blowing at all. Quite the opposite, it was a calm 77 degrees.
“ Hmm! What was that noise?”
As she exited the door, she heard someone crying. Almost
immediately her maternal instincts kicked in.
Recognizing the voice she threw down her purse and shot up the stairs.
“ Curtis, where are you? ” Hannah Louise, called as she ran
up the stairs. “ Mama’s coming, and whatever else is there better be gone when
I get there!”
Stopping to look in the children’s bedroom, she found no
one. Walking to the bathroom everything was okay, except the light was on and
water was still in the sink. Now in the hallway, she heard noise coming from
the linen closet. She swung open the
door.
“ Curtis, baby why are you at home? Your suppose to be at
school next door.” she asked.
“ Mama, something was after me? ” he said as she wiped his
face.
“ Where did you see this something at? ” she asked
“ It was in the bathroom. When I cut the light on it was in
the mirror. Then when I ran away, it followed me” he said nervously trying to
explain what he saw.
“ Come on let’s go back. Remember whenever your scared of
something, what did Papa tell you to say? ”
Looking at his mother as if she had revealed a secret.
“ Oh yeh! I forgot.
The blood of Jesus is against you.”
Getting up as they went back to the bathroom to squash his fears,
they stood at the door. With the lights off, she told Curtis to click the light
switch.
“ Go ahead, it’s okay. Mama is here! ” she said. Giving
Curtis all the confidence in the world. The moment he reached up to flip the
switch the light blew out.
“ Mama what happened? ” Curtis asked.
“ Oh sweetie, nothing we can’t handle. The light bulb blew out. Why don’t you go
look in the linen closet and on the second shelf there should be a package of
light bulbs.”
Listening to his mother off he went. “ Mama I can’t see? I need some light”
“ Okay, one second honey.
I’ll raise the shade.” she said.
Reaching up she tugged on the shade as it rolled halfway
towards the center of the window. “
Now, is that better? ” she said.
“ That’s better. Oh I see them.” he said as he reached in to
get the bulbs.
Looking out of the window as she conversed with her five
year old. Hannah turned around to see a
startling revelation. As the sunlight
from the window shone upon the child, it cast his shadow to the floor. The shadow
was that of a giant with wings.
“ That’s it, that’s what he’s afraid of. ” she said. Not
knowing that she was thinking aloud.
Curtis is standing with the bulbs in hand. “ Mama are you okay? ” he asked.
“ Oh look at the time. We have to hurry so that we can get
you next door, for school ” she said.
After replacing the bulb, Hannah stayed to help.
“ Mama it’s okay now, you can go.” said the boy.
“Alright I’ll be downstairs.”she said.
Walking down the stairs in a daze, Hannah worried that the
six babies who were placed in her care would be taken from her. A tear drop rolled down the side of her left
cheek as it clung under her chin. She
began to remember the very first day they came into her life.
