THE TALE OF A DRAGON
There was once a small
dragon by the name of Dragoone Delafield Deneaux VII. He was raised by his grandmother who affectionately called him
"Draggy." They lived in a
small forest which was known as The Forest of the Fireflies.
Draggy's Granmama taught him
to be kind, gentle, and polite.
"There is entirely too much fierceness in the world now," she
said.
Draggy was particularly fond
of gumdrops. He carried a supply of
them in a small pouch on his tail so that he would nibble upon them when
hungry.
Each day Draggy played with
his friends in the forest. They had
such a good time. Draggy gave all the
little animals gumdrops. Candide the Calf liked pink ones, Petronius the Pig
preferred green ones. Shelley the Skunk
chose blue gumdrops to match her beautiful eyes, and Beowulf the Bear really
had no preference.
Granmama and Draggy went
into the village one morning to buy some more gumdrops. The shopkeeper said
that he was very sorry but that he hadn't a single gumdrop in the store.
"Oh my," exclaimed
Draggy, "what ever shall we do?"
Granmama thanked the shopkeeper and replied that they would come back
soon.
After Draggy's little
friends had heard the gumdrop story, they were very sad for Draggy had always
shared his gumdrops with them.
"We all must think
about what to do," the animals said.
Finally, Petronius the Pig
had a plan.
"Why don't we plant a
gumdrop tree? Then Draggy can have all
the gumdrops he wants. Let's keep this
a surprise. We will plant the tree deep in the forest. When the first gumdrops appear, we'll bring
Draggy out and show him."
"There is just one
problem," remarked Candide the Calf.
"Where will we find a gumdrop to plant so that the tree will
grow?"
"Oh, that is
easy." replied Petronius the Pig. "I buried my green one. Now all we
have to do is find it."
All Draggy's friends went
with Petronius to help him locate his gumdrop. So Petronius the Pig rooted and
dug and dug and rooted. The little
creatures watched while Petronius kept digging.
"I know the gumdrop is
here," said he. "It really isn't very hard to find."
After three days of doing
nothing but rooting and digging, Petronius, tired and discouraged, sat down.
Candide the Calf hugged him.
"Please let us help
you, Petronius," she encouraged.
"Of course, we shall help
you find the gumdrop," offered Augustus the Alligator. So all Draggy's friends dug and dug and dug.
Along came Ulysses the
Unicorn. "What ever are you
doing?" inquired Ulysses.
Beowulf the Bear replied
that they were looking for a green gumdrop which Petronius had buried.
"Well, I too shall help
you," responded Ulysses. After more rooting and digging and digging and
rooting, Beowulf the Bear saw something tiny and green.
"We've found it! Just look here!" he shouted.

About the Book
The Tale of the Dragon is a collection of 13 short
stories devoted to the adventures of Draggy, a little dragon who lives in “The
Forest of the Fireflies” with his beloved Granmama. These quaint stories were written at the urging of the children
of the authors, Thaddeus II and Juliette Wynn. When Thad III, Carter, and Noelle were small, their parents
entertained them with stories about Draggy and his friends. Soon they and the neighborhood children were
asking what the little dragon would do next.
So, the adventures of Draggy grew in number as did the years of their
children. Now adults, they have
encouraged their author parents to share the stories for all Granmamas to read
to their beloved grandchildren.
Draggy has been taught to be kind and gentle by his
Granmama. His adventures include other
little creatures of the forest and meadow, namely Ophelia Otter, Dr. Orville
Owl, Mrs. Phoebe Partridge and her babies, Shelley the Skunk, Augustus the
Alligator, Beowulf the Bear, Candide the Calf, Petronius the Pig, Ulysses the
Unicorn, and Livermore Lamb. Draggy and
the creatures help others in the forest in time of need. Draggy grows up along the way, even
attending Knight School and learning French.
You won’t want to miss the story about Ulysses the Unicorn when he loses
his horn and how the forest creatures deal with the mean Mr. Frederick Faux
Fox.
About the Author
Juliette and Thaddeus Wynn II wrote The Tale of the Dragon for their three
children, Thad III, Carter, and Noelle.
Their hobbies include travel, reading, attending museums, theatre,
opera, ballet, sports, cooking, photography and aviation activities. Their home is in Memphis, Tennessee.
Juliette was a classroom teacher for thirteen years
and enjoyed assisting her three children with their school writing
assignments. She has also tutored
English to friends as she has a BA degree in English and Speech from the
University of Miami. She has also
attended the University of Memphis where she has taken courses in Elementary
Education.
Thaddeus was an Army Aviator for thirteen of the
twenty years he spent in the military.
He has a B.A. from the University of Mississippi and an A.S. Degree from
State Technical Institute. He perused
several business activities before realizing that writing was his greatest
interest.
