About the Book
This story begins with a 54 year old teacher and a
20 year old student and quickly switches to an 88 year old teacher and a 54
year old student who happen to be the same mother and daughter. The
daughter felt cheated by the untimely death of her father 35 years ago, but
quickly swithes focus to her mother's story. She relates the feelings about
losing her mother peice by piece while remaining grateful for her long life.
The decline is palpable from the time her mother was incapacitated by sciatica
and a slight stroke two years ago that moved her from independent living to
round the clock healthcare. After that there was a medical mistake that
resulted in a 45 day hospital stay and many near death moments. There were
times after confinement to a wheelchair that the teacher emerged as "the
dancing queen."
The story is
a Tuesday With Morrie. to the author. It is poignant, has humor and
strong spirituality. I believe this story could help others deal with failing
health of aged parents. The author did not speak of guilt because of the
sacrifices she made to keep her mother living independently as long as she had.
She went so far as taking a work position one block from her mother's residence
-to be available for possible emergencies. The mother has enormous emotional
strength and the correct attitude to deal with adversity. In her own words,
"God's not ready for me and the devil won't have me."
