About the Book
During the so called “Roaring Twenties” there was
certainly a great deal going on in the world, but the Burk family seemed
oblivious to it all. Their thoughts were centered on the Broadway stage, while
all around them both good and bad things were happening on a colossal scale.
Disease was rampant. Most of the world was
struggling to recover from an influenza epidemic that had wiped out some 20
million people. Also devastating, were such common diseases as scarlet fever,
diphtheria, poliomyelitis and many others.
Then there was the mad stock market craze. It seemed
that nearly everyone with extra dollars to spend was putting it all into the
stock market. But hopes and dreams quickly plunged with the market. The Great
Depression followed.
Yet some good and important things were happening:
The era ushered in the first commercial radio broadcasts, talking pictures,
experiments with television, and great advances in aeronautics -- including
Charles Lindbergh’s heroic flight across the Atlantic.
But except for the impoverishing effects of the
Great Depression, the Burk family seemed to ignore the world-wide turbulence
while struggling to prepare their talented children to become stars on the
Broadway stage. How they tried to manage this is what this humorous book is all
about.
About the Author
Frank Dixon Burk, youngest sibling of the Burk
family, was a keen observer of his lively family during the pre- and post-
depression years. Dubbed “the quiet one” by his older brother, he stored away
all the quirky happenings and hilarious ups and downs of his family, only to
bring them back to life for everyone who enjoys a good story.
As a home-centered boy, he couldn’t guess that his
destiny would include four years of world travel in the Air Force during World
War II, a successful career as a writer, author, creative director and
president of an advertising agency. He is also an accomplished artist, natural
musician (cello, violin, piano) and consummate family man.
As you will see from reading only a page or two, the
author is also an engaging raconteur.
