About the Book

During the summer of 1925, an elderly man arrives by automobile at a rundown ranch that borders the infamous tract of arid land called Robbers Roost in Southeastern Utah. The new arrival is Butch Cassidy, cousin of Isaiah Parker, owner of the ranch. Isaiah is a recent widower who suffered a disabling injury; he and his son Jonah are struggling to hang on to their home and failing ranch. Cassidy rents a room and horse with plans to camp in the Roost and reminisce about the old days when he was the most wanted man on two continents. Taking an instant liking to young Jonah, Cassidy spends his evenings telling him tales about his outlaw years. His aim is to teach the boy about life and prepare him for its many pitfalls and help him to appreciate the worth of being an honorable man. During his stay Butch is drawn into the stormy relationship that exists between father and son. Strife and occasional abuse are brought on because of Isaiah’s difficulty dealing with the heartbreaking loss of his wife and Jonah’s mother three years earlier. Never a man to back away from adversity their cousin does what he can to rectify the situation and bring father and son together once again. Also woven into this tapestry of family relationships and western adventure, are surprises, a mystery, and reflections of a bittersweet love that many believe existed between Butch and Etta Place.

Mr. Brierley is currently writing a screenplay for Yesterday’s Bandit; he resides in a log cabin near a ponderosa pine forest in a remote area in northern New Mexico with his wife, Barb. Enjoying the panoramic view of the Sangre De Cristo mountain range with them is their cat, two dogs and three horses.

About the Author

Barry Brierley has had the perfect background to become a writer.  Living in different parts of the country and employed in a variety of jobs (three years in the Marine Corps, a miner in taconite mines and underground gold mine, an illustrator, designer, and cartoonist),  he has met individuals from many walks of life and with assorted backgrounds. This real life background helped immensely in the author’s (Brierley’s) development of character for the people in his novels and screenplays. During that time period he eventually evolved into a Wildlife and Old West artist where realism was essential for success. His style of painting was the birth of his love of research and realism. It was while living in Arizona that he began to write. Inevitably his research became a part of everything he was destined to write, whether it be a novel, short story, or screenplay. The author’s historical novel, Yesterday’s Bandit, came into being after many years of research and countless conversations with people in Wyoming, Utah, Montana, and Arizona. All of these people had anecdotes and opinions about Butch Cassidy and The Wild Bunch that had been passed on to them down through the generations. Although written as a novel most of the incidents described in the book are based on actual historical events.
