About the Book

This is a first-hand account of growing up on one of three adjoining family ranches in east- central New Mexico during the 1940s and '50s. These ranches were obtained via the homestead act, beginning in the mid 1920s. Much toil and effort was necessary to establish them as viable sources of livelihood.

Three generations of Payne Family members pressed forward with grit and determination to make a success of these ranching endeavors while creating a civilized and unique life-style for those that followed. The adjoining ranches eventually covered a sprawling land area of around thirty square miles.

While it is true that the foundation had been laid by those who preceeded her, the author was very much involved in the day-to-day workings of her family's life there. It was a sometimes nearly unbearable existence, with just as many touches of splendor. All aspects of this interesting life are explored, from everyday household and ranch routines, to vivid descriptions of the difficulties and rewards of dealing with animals and their peculiar traits as well as those of nature in general.

Many prized photos are used to make the story come to life in a nostalgic and realistic way.

About the Author

Naomi Payne Wadsworth was born in Roswell, New Mexico. Within days, she returned home to the family's ranch, in ruggedly beautiful Lincoln County. The next fourteen years were spent there, with the exception of a brief period in California. She has one brother, Norman.

The children's schooling was accomplished by their self-reliant parents, with permission from school officials who administered achievement tests at a one-room school in the area. There was no education outside the home until the family sold the ranch and moved to Texas in 1953, where Naomi attended high school.

This is Mrs. Wadsworth's first attempt at writing. She was strongly influenced by the writing efforts of her late father, David Vernon Payne. Following the move to Texas, he studied under the tutelage of the late Lillith Lorraine, poet laureate and founder of the Poetry Society of Texas. He was a charter member of the San Angelo branch of that organization and received wide recognition. He published a poetry quarterly, Cyclo~Flame, which was distributed world-wide. Naomi's mother, Ila Mae, also wrote poetry.

Naomi resides in San Angelo, Texas with her husband, Donald Wadsworth. Their blended families include five children and five grandchildren.
