Nervously, I bit my lower lip, as I raised my hand to knock on the door. I couldn’t bring my hand down to knock. In my mind, I could see pictures of the Indian standing over me with a knife in one hand and a fist full of my hair in the other. My arm went limp and fell to my side. I turned and started to leave. "Caw," shouted a huge, black crow that was perched on a rafter above my head. I bolted down the steps and hid behind a tree. "Caw, caw," shrieked the crow. Slowly, the cabin door opened. The old man stepped out onto the porch. I felt weak and light-headed. I wanted to run, but my feet were frozen with fear. "I’ve been expecting you. Show yourself," demanded the old man. I couldn’t move. "I know you are there. The winged creature has told me," shouted the Indian. With extreme caution, I stepped out from behind the tree. I swallowed hard. My heart was doing flip-flops, as I tried to speak. "Are you Talks With The Eagle?" I asked, my voice shook with fear. "My people call me Wanmdi-okiya. I am the Medicine Man of the Plains tribe," said the man, proudly. "White men call me Talks With The Eagle," he explained. "I need your help. My pa is very sick," I pleaded. "I will help no white man. Go. Return to your people," commanded Eagle. The old man turned and closed the door. I should have known better. Ma and the Doc tried to warn me. I came all this way in the freezing cold for nothing. I thought. Then, a picture of Pa thrashing around in the bed flashed through my mind. I could feel my blood burn with anger as it streamed through my body. "Talks With The Eagle MUST help Pa!" I said to myself with rage. Zeke let out a small yip. I took a deep breath, bit my lower lip, and curled my fingers into a fist. I ran up the porch steps and pounded on the cabin door. "Please, you have to help my pa! He shot the Enchanted deer. You must help him," I pleaded. Moments later, the door opened. "What do you know about the Enchanted?" asked Eagle. "Please let me in! I’ll tell you everything." The old man stepped aside and with his hand, gestured me to come in. I walked inside the small, dark cabin. It had the musky odor of wild animals. Buffalo robes were piled in one corner of the room. Beaver and deer hides hung from the walls. "Come, sit down and tell me what you know of the Enchanted," demanded Eagle, as he pointed to a blanket in front of the fireplace. We both sat down. Talks With The Eagle gazed deeply into the blazing fire. I was afraid and ashamed, I didn’t know what to say. I sat and stared at the floor. After moments of endless silence, I could feel the old man’s eyes burning the top of my head.

About the Author
Laura started her writing career by writing feature stories for a local newspaper. It wasn’t long until her love for writing developed and she began to write poetry. After receiving several merits and having a few of her poems published, Laura decided to take on a bigger challenge, writing a book for children. Laura had always been intrigued by the life style of Native Americans. When she and her family joined the Nebraska Muzzleloader Association, she met many interesting Native American speakers. With the tales of the Native Americans combined with the love of hunting by her family, Laura’s imagination grew. It wasn’t long until she put a story together, thus, The Legend of Prairie Island.
