The hunters were inching along slowly now with an alert eye on every tree and bush. It was so deathly still that you could almost hear the dog think. Suddenly there was a muffled sound and Buck was face down on the ground with a cougar biting at his head. Puff was still a few steps ahead of Buck and straining on his leash. When the cougar dropped on Buck, Puff got loose and free to move so he lunged at the cougar and knocked it off of Buck and in a heap. That gave the split second needed for Jake to shoot the huge cat. With the best fast shot known to man, the cougar was deader than the proverbial door nail. Everyone was frozen in their tracks for a few moments while the impact of the situation sank into their minds.
Puff attacked the dead cougar where it was laying and tried to kill it again. When he realized he was too late he thought, "Fiddlesticks, I thought sure I had him dead to rights!" But that was the wrong way to put it. Then Puff remembered, "I was following cougar tracks beyond where that one was in the tree. There darned sure is another cougar, probably the mate of this one."
By the time the cougar was still, Jake was checking on Buck. He said, "Amos, Buck is conscious, please start for the house with him and I’ll radio Olive to call 911." He further stated, "To avoid confusion, I’m automatically in charge anytime Buck isn’t able."
Jake keyed the mike on his radio and said, "Olive this is Jake, please come in." Olive turned to Wanda and said, "My God! Something bad has happened or Buck would be calling!" She pushed the radio TALK button and said, "Go ahead." Jake said, "Buck has been hurt, we don’t know how bad, but we are on the way in now. Call 911 and we should be at the house in about 10 minutes." Olive said, "Roger." She called 911 and repeated the information she had. The person she spoke to said, "Yes Mam, please stay on the line." As usual he dispatched Fire, Ambulance and the Sheriff.
Jake said, "Harvey, Bill and Oliver, how about taking our gear and the cougar into the corral?" When they got to the fence Harvey started through first and caught his clothing in the barbed wire so thoroughly that he couldn’t even move. Bill and Oliver tried to free him and made matters worse. Amos laughed and said, "Get out of the way, you guys are like a monkey playing football!" Amos eased Buck down, then grabbed the cougar and tossed it over the fence. Later they learned that it weighed 240 pounds.

About the Author
Perry Charles Dodge was born on June 23rd, 1931 at Prairie City, Oregon. He grew up at his grand parents’ gold mine in eastern Oregon.
He worked on cattle ranches, logged, mined and worked as a carpenter’s helper, then helped build and test race cars. A brief time servicing crop-dusting aircraft inspired him to spend twenty-two years in the Air Force as an aircraft electrician.
After the service he worked for fifteen years for the Federal Reserve Bank in Portland, Oregon. Meanwhile he was a partner in a dog kennel. Next came a few years running a handyman service, finally at age 63, he retired to write short stories and his autobiography.
