About the Book

At St Philomena Academy convent school, Aurora finds more that just religious mystery to explore. The arbitrary cruelty the nuns inflict upon the pupils and the shameful secrets that like dormant in the academy provoke Aurora and her close-knit group of friends to ingenious feats of cunning and guile.

In Behind the Stained-Glass Window, Patzi Raven allows the reader to witness the workings of a world where the oppression of children is institutionalized and the rites of growing up are soiled by guilt. In prose that weaves the past and present into an almost Proustian translucence, Raven takes on the urgent themes of adolescent piety, sexual awakening and the intensity of female friendship. Against the austere backdrop of the convent, a charming and touching tale emerges of the persistence of the sense of justice and the value of friendship through time.

About the Author

Patzi Raven was born in Toledo, OH. When she was 9 years old, she attended a boarding school in Michigan. It was while she was away at school that the desire to write a book based on her experiences was born.

Inspired by the Diary of Anne Frank, she decided to keep a diary of her own. She dreamed of someday publishing her own book. Behind the Stained-Glass Window is that book.

She attended the University of Toledo, Bowling Green State University and the University of Denver. She was an elementary teacher in northwest Ohio for 31 years.

Patzi Raven is the pseudonym for Patricia L. Zielinski. She chose the name Raven while she was writing the book because she would get up early each day and write under a tree filled with black birds. She joked that it was a choice between Patzi "Old Crow" or Raven. Raven sounded better.

Behind the Stained-Glass Window is a retrospective account of "coming of age" in an all-girl's Catholic boarding school in the '50s and '60s. It tells the story of adolescence and the confusion and growth that goes with it. It explores the emotional dynamics of a patriarchal upbringing and recollects both painful and fond memories, including a nun's mysterious death.
