One Christmas morning, as the earth was celebrating peace on earth, exactly what Jesus Christ stood for there was a report of a 150 car pile-up on Interstate 101, the Hollywood Freeway in Hollywood, California, just a few yards from the Rosemont's Funeral Parlor. There were twenty reported dead and approximate fifty injured from the fatal Christmas morning pile-up. This is just one accidental happening that occurred out of about a thousand on Christmas Day nationwide The American highway is the number one killer in America, the number one cause of death in a nation that is supposed to be an example to the world. America, the worldwide peacemaker, in its own country, on its own grounds, was just the opposite of what it should be. America has the leading cause of death by cigarette and alcohol use, and employs the Democratic government and the nuclear bomb to keep world peace, but by only show of force. Just as the hand gun is suppose to keep the peace. Every police officer has one, yet the murder rate in this country is number one throughout the world. An estimated 20,000 Americans are murdered every year, usually be a hand gun.
On New Year's Eve, there was another report on the radio that a jet plane had just crashed, killing 300 passengers, and a train had derailed, killing 150 passengers. Both the pilot and the train engineer were diagnosed as having too much alcohol to drink. On New Year's Day, the Crips and Bloods, two notorious Los Angeles gangs, had a turf-drug war, shooting each other in South Central Los Angeles, an estimated twenty killed, ten on each side ten Bloods and ten Crips!
Darrick Price Jones was driving home from work one day and a fire truck just missed his car, going to a neighborhood fire. One died from smoke suffocation, a marijuana dealer who forgot to put out his reefer stick and fell asleep while in a deep high. Darrick always passed by Rosemont's Funeral Parlor everyday going to and from work, noticing at least one car wreck a week, almost in the same spot, a few yards from Rosemont's Funeral Parlor.
One of the Rosemonts happened to work at the same postal facility that Darrick did. He never knew that her relatives owned and operated the Rosemont's Funeral Parlor, the number one parlor in Los Angeles, California, nor did he wonder why there was a car wreck in the same spot every week for the past ten years, just a few yards from Rosemont's Funeral Parlor.

The wheel of fortune starts out on a downward spin for a woman named Raggie when she is born to a self-centered mother and an alcoholic, abusive father. Two years into her young life, it seems to take an upturn when Raggie's mother divorces and remarries. But through several unfortunate circumstances, Raggie finds herself living in the ghettos of Chicago at eighteen, supporting herself and her mother through prostitution after her stepfather is killed while trying to rob a bank.
However the wheel of fortune spins in Raggie's favor when an unexpected windfall allows her and her mother to improve their standard of living, and Raggie becomes determined to better herself. Eventually she falls in love and marries, and fate seems to be content to let her live out her days in peace - or so it seems.
Many years later, Raggie's son, Darrick, has fallen in love with Linda, the niece of a Mafia boss. Unbeknownst to Darrick, Linda takes part in her uncle's nefarious schemes and has marked Darrick as her victim. Luckily; fate has other plans for Darrick.
James tries to recover his life ... what he once had .... before the turmoil from hell took over. In Part Three, titled Pride and Misfortune, James falls in love, becomes happily married, and has a boy and girl. Years pass, but his pride comes between his marriage and children because of women's liberation; when role of man and woman is reversed! Unfortunately James has the misfortune of falling into hell!
Fast-paced gripping, and at times touching, Price of Forbidden Love culminates in a deadly manner, with the triumph of love over that which is pure evil.
About the Author
Born in Evanston, Illinois, Douglas Lowell Pemberton has spent the past twenty years in Los Angeles, California, where he was employed as a postal employee until his retirement in September 1994, due to occupational asthma. Douglas is currently a teacher with the Los Angeles Unified School District. He gleaned the ideas for Price of Forbidden from the lives and experiences of his mother and himself, and, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology and a minor in art, he was able to put a creative spin on the events fate had bestowed upon them. In addition to spending time with his seventeen-year-old daughter, Arista Porche, Mr. Pemberton also enjoys singing, watching movies, reading, writing, and participating in many sports. Slick is his second published work; Price of Forbidden Love is his first, and It’s a Shame is his third published book.
