About the Book

“As I Remember” starts with a short synopsis of the author’s early youth in pre war Europe, how she was raised in a loving and happy environment, how she grew in a pleasant, carefree atmosphere in Nice France, Capital and Queen of the French Riviera. Her book is written in a lay person style, and is her individual perspective of World War II.  She was only eleven years old when the conflict in Europe began.  She penned a narrative of the war years, her recollections of the intolerable circumstances she faced, the unforeseen events that took place in her young life as seen through the eyes of a teenager.  How she matured too fast, too soon. She tells us about the good, bad, sad and funny situations experienced by herself, and her family throughout “The Occupation” of her Country by a conquering army, “The Resistance,”and “The Liberation” of France by the Allies on 6 June 1944. She puts forward her inner thoughts about her hopes in an incertain future, the emotions she felt at the suffering of millions of people, and the grim Jewish situation of that time.

About the Author

Andrée Icardo Joy was born in 1927 in Nice, France.  She was educated in the Nice school system, graduating from the “Ecole Secondaire,” (Junior High School).  Hardships at home brought on by the war in Europe prevented her from furthering her education. In 1946, soon after her arrival in Taunton, Massachusetts she regularly attended night school, which was terminated by her son’s birth.  Throughout the years, Andrée Icardo Joy learned and polished her English, mastering the written word as well.  She is a self educated person throughout. Many years later she enrolled and graduated from a correspondence course in writing, with “The Long Ridge Writers Group,” based in Connecticut.
