The voice reverberated in the air, as he advanced toward the parked cars. He felt that it would be expedient that he keep moving. Inasmuch as he was in a state of mental and physical torpor, it seemed that all the cars that were parked outside were similar. As he stumbled around searching for Tom’s car, the cool air apprised him of the fact that he was wet with perspiration. It seemed like hours before he finally discovered Tom’s car. He opened the door, jumped in and tried to become invisible.
In the meantime, Tom partially blocked out his conversation with Sammy as he observed Pastor Levi hustling out of the house and incoherently wandering around the parked cars. He noticed that he finally got into his car, slamming the door behind him. As far as Tom was concerned, his demeanor demonstrated anger. Suddenly changing the conversation, he exclaimed, "I wonder what went wrong in the house!"
Sammy squinted his eyes as he looked toward the car. Then he humped his shoulders and nonchalantly stated, "It’s no telling, Tom, why it’s no telling."
"I think I should go and check on Pastor Levi. I’ll see you later!" Tom uttered as he made his way to the car.
Tom got in the car, and looked over at Pastor Levi. He was as red as a beet and shaking like a leaf on a tree on a windy day. His hair was standing straight up on his head, and he was perspiring profusely.
Tom inquired, "What happened in the house?"
Contemptuously, Pastor Levi stated, "Those were insolent people in that house! What they did was not very smart! This could institute a lawsuit! Well, I can’t blame such people because--"
Tom decided to interrupt before he had said too much or gone too far, "Pray tell me! What did they do?"
"They planted a dilapidated chair in the corner for me to sit in! I fell for the scheme and almost killed myself! That can institute a lawsuit! Now you know, that was not very smart!" Pastor Levi reiterated.

With determination that the congregation would flourish, two brave parishioners subjected themselves to a windstorm. Now this was not an ordinary windstorm, it was a deadly hurricane, one of the most powerful in Virginia history. The severe cyclone consisted of heavy rains and winds exceeding seventy-five miles per hour. While the hurricane raged, Sarah and Tom fought for survival.
About the Author
Mary Flowers Carter retired from the public schools in Gary, Indiana after thirty-seven years of service. After retirement, she taught writing at the Gary Community College and reading at Indiana University Northwest. Carter writes with luminous intensity about accountability in the ecclesiastical profession. It is her anticipation that this novel serves as inspiration for some, and a source of knowledge for others, while it entertains.
Mary Carter and her husband reside in Burlington, North Carolina where she is working on her second novel.
