The first order of business is to secure your business license. The license can normally be secured at a local courthouse. Depending on what area of the country you live in, unless you are going to have a storefront, you may only need to obtain a DBA (doing business as). When you apply for your license or DBA, the appropriate forms will be provided to you. They will ask for the name of the business, type of business, names of owners and address. An immediate name search will be done to ensure no one else is using the name you are intending to use. The cost is minimal.
If you intend to open a business account at your local bank, you will be unable to do so until you can provide a copy of your DBA or license.
Next go to your local office supply store and get ready to get organized and set up your home office. You will need a mileage book, a planner with nice large boxes for each day of the week, file folders and other essentials such as pens, notepads etc. If you do not have a file cabinet, I would suggest you get a couple of accordion file folders.
I suggest you keep your mileage book in your vehicle at all times. Make it a habit when you get into your vehicle to write down the mileage showing on the odometer. As soon as you return home write down the mileage and make sure you date it properly. Your mileage can be used as a tax write-off as long as the mileage is business related. Therefore, going to the office supply store would be considered business related.
It is important that you keep all receipts related to your business. If you maintain a current and accurate filing system for these receipts, come tax time it will be much easier to prepare.
All receipts for vehicle repairs, new tires, vehicle registration and all vehicle maintenance upkeep should be kept for tax purposes. If your office is located in your home, you will be able to write off a portion of your heating and cooling. Therefore, keep all utility bills as well as telephone bills.
Find a good accountant! I suggest that you speak with other self-employed individuals to get a referral. Investing in a good reputable accountant is a must. Your accountant will more than likely suggest that you file your taxes on a quarterly basis.

Over the last few decades the number of two income and single parent households have increased dramatically. Therefore, creating a huge demand for services such as housekeeping, home and lawn maintenance, childcare, etc.
At one time, women who made the decision to work outside the home oftentimes did not have an education that prepared them to do little more than housework or laundry for other families. They were often considered the "hired help" and the work was somehow looked upon as less than desirable. Compensation for these services was minimal, to say the least. However, this not only applied to women but to men as well. Men with little education or training found themselves working for the wealthier families as the handyman, the gardener, etc.
Today, you can make a choice to clean, do maintenance, painting or childcare and expect to make an above average income with little or no stress. Not everyone has aspirations of a college education. There are many individuals, including myself, who truly enjoy working with their hands and having the freedom that comes with being self-employed.
The whole area of service is bursting with opportunities and folks the sky is literally the limit!
