Among other most debated topics of the Christian era, the return of Christ seems to predominate. Burning discussions between Theologians, Bible students and believers are generally fueled with interpretations that contradict each other. Although the Bible Believers seem to split about the implication of the subject, they all ascertain that the return of Christ is a reality. Christians might diverge on the time or the series of events surrounding the Second Coming of Christ, but all agree that He will come back to raise the dead and to exercise the judgments of God and to establish a new era before entering eternity. Today, no respectful academic scholar can deny that Jesus Christ came to this earth two thousand years ago. The first coming of Jesus remains one of the most authenticated facts of human history. Thus, the assurance of the Second Coming of Christ is after the doctrine of salvation, the most frequent and the most important teaching in the Bible. More than three hundred promises are recorded about the Second Coming in the teachings of the prophets, Jesus Himself, and in the writings of the apostles. Even heavenly beings (angels) came to this earth to proclaim this great Advent still to come.
The hope of every Christian is based upon the return of Jesus Christ or His Second Coming. In this regard, the great Apostle Paul wrote, "It is the blessed hope of the Church." This extraordinary event will start the beginning of the achievement of the plan of God for humanity. Everyone who believes that the Bible is the word of God realizes the truth about the Coming back of Jesus Christ. To enlighten our readers about the misunderstanding or misinterpretation regarding the meaning of this great event so awaited by the Christian world, it is important that we make an objective analysis of the subject under the light of the Holy Scriptures.
Our analysis of the subject will entail answering the following questions: What does the Bible say about the return of Christ? What did Jesus Himself say about His return? Have the angels spoken about the Second Coming of Christ?
The prophets of the Old Testament throughout their announcements predicted the arrival of Jesus Christ though they did not predict the Advent of the Messiah as a baby in Bethlehem and His coming for the rapture of the Church with power and glory on the earth for the establishment of the millennium kingdom. We can apprehend that Evangelicals understand the prophecies concerning the Coming of Christ differently.
If for some Theologians and Believers, the entire Old Testament prophecies related to the Coming of Christ have been already fulfilled at His first Advent, for others, there are a significant number of prophecies that are awaiting future fulfillment at His Second Coming.
Jesus resurrected three days after His crucifixion and before His ascension to remain on the right side of the Heavenly Father; He personally taught His followers that He would come again (John 14: 3). On the Mount of Olives, the Lord Jesus told His disciples about the future. He also warned them of difficult times ahead and He assured them of His return in reference to Matthew 24.
Angelic messengers too predicted the return of Christ as it is so well stated in Acts 1: 11. To those who witnessed the ascension of Christ, the angels said, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus who was taken up from you into heaven will so come in the same manner that you saw him go into heaven.
In addition, John, in the book of Revelation, asserted eloquently the Second Coming of Christ. In a vision, John saw Christ bearing the name of "word of God" coming from heaven to earth along with the armies of heaven.
Yes, the Second Coming of Christ suscitates various points of view. To one's point there are: premillennial pretribulational view, premillennial post-tribulational view, premillennial partial rapture view, premillennial mid-tribulational view, pre-wrath rapture view, amillennial view, and postmillennial view.
I will study the systems of eschatology by identifying the main millennialist positions, such as: Premillennialism, postmillennialism, amillennialism, and finally I will analyze in depth the prophetic signs of the Second Advent.
Also in this work, I am going to analyze the imminence of the return of the LORD, the reason of being of the Second Coming of Christ, the two phases or steps of the Second Coming of Christ, the characteristics of the Second Coming, the contrasts between the Second coming for the saints and the Second Coming with the saints, the Great Tribulation period between the rapture and the Millennium, and the dispensational pre- millennialism.
I hope that this work will encourage the heart of the evangelical believers and make the skeptical and the agnostics see the light. This material could also be a handy reference tool to Bible students and to other researchers interesting in eschatological Events. To God only be the glory.
