About the Book

Clarence Treadway, a very proper individual married to Mary for forty years, has taken all he could of her humiliations and has plotted her death. Mary had a stroke and has a firm control over him. He feels helpless and suffocating in her authority. His hatred is so deep that he wants to lash out, but he successfully hides it from her.

The plot becomes complicated when they get a flat and they stay in a small town in Nebraska. The mechanic learns that Clarence is wanted for suspicion of arson and pursues him. Clarence successfully gets away and continues through Nebraska menacing Mary who is by now fearful of her husband.

They arrive in Colorado and stay in several motels, where he leaves devastation. While Mary is resting, Clarence is out dining and wooing women. A mishap on a Colorado mountain places Mary in a hospital to recuperate from her injuries. Clarence entices two other women who enjoy his charms. With the police in pursuit, Clarence speeds through the Colorado Mountains until they reach Steamboat Springs where all his schemes of hatred will spew to fruition.
