Apple Pie, Coffee, and God

Feeling deep in the throes of debt, years ago, I decided one day, to face the enemy head on!

With pencil in hand, I wrote down every single solitary expense that came to mind. Once and for all, I’d know just how much we owed.

With the bleak figures in front of me, I decided a check for ten thousand dollars would serve our purposes nicely.

Armed with that information, I started yakking at God.

"You know, God," I said, "if You would send us a check for ten thousand dollars, that would square us away with our creditors. It would be like a new beginning."

The very next morning, while opening the mail, I found it! There, in all its glory, was a check for ten thousand dollars! It was made out in my husband’s name. Only one thing ruined it. In one corner was the four-letter word, "void."

I couldn’t help but laugh and say, "O.K. wiseguy!"

74. WHEW !

Our youngest son and his wife purchased a rundown farmhouse shortly after their marriage. Not only had the house been structurally ignored, but the yard also was the product of little attention. What once was farmland had grown into woods, threatening to devour the house, "pac-man" style, if not soon controlled.

After a chain sawing session, Ron and a friend decided to burn the downed trees. They attempted to create the fire in one corner and planned to feed it as they went along.

Not wanting to use gasoline as a starter, they gathered up newspapers, cardboard, and anything else they could find, but to no avail. The fire would not take hold, so they tried another corner with success.

Several weeks later Ron was out by the non-cooperative corner surveying the area. Scuffing his feet, he kicked loose a can. Upon investigation he discovered the can was half full of ether starting fluid! Had the fire started there, as originally planned, the can could have exploded, either seriously hurting the guys or killing them, along with burning an uncontrolled area, probably including the house!

God’s handiwork? You bet!
