Usually it would only be the lawyer allowed to see the prisoners, but he made an exception. They walked into a big room with a long table and about twenty chairs around it. The Sheriff and Javan sat down and in a few minutes the Sheriff’s friend brought in Jo Lee. She saw her brother and smiled but was almost upset that he was there. "What are you doing here?" "I had to see you, Jo Lee. It’s been weeks since I could really talk to you. Yesterday, I didn’t get a chance to talk much." "Don’t worry, little brother, I’ll be home soon." She tried to look reassuring. "Jo Lee. You’ve got to tell Sheriff Brown what really happened. It was Celia Ann, wasn’t it?" "How..." She stopped and the Sheriff looked at her with an expression which told her he knew it was Celia too, but she just looked at Javan and the Sheriff. "I know what I am doing." "No. You don’t, Jo Lee." Javan grabbed her hand. "She is not worth this. You know it. Don’t you?" "We are a family, little brother. You know that. Remember, we all stick together, no matter what." "We will stick with you, but not like this. You need to tell us the truth. Please," he begged her. Jo Lee sat down with Javan and put her hands in his. "You are so innocent, little brother. You are compassionate and caring. You have all good qualities and you wouldn’t turn your back even on Celia Ann, would you? I know you wouldn’t. Celia Ann has been mean and hateful to you, but you have never done anything to get back at her, have you?" Javan shook his head no. "You have only tried to love her as your sister, haven’t you?" "Yes, but..." Jo Lee interrupted him. "Then, you understand why this is happening, don’t you?" Javan looked at her and again shook his head up and down as answering yes. "We’re family, Jo Lee. I know this, but I love you and I would be here for Celia too. Not because I think she was in the right, but because she is my flesh and blood, knowing she probably did this mean thing and not you. Mother always says that blood is thicker than water, they say." "Yes, little brother, and the James’ blood is thicker too, isn’t it? I can make it through this and since you and mother are here standing behind me, I can be even stronger." She kissed him on the cheek and he smiled his big, deep-dimpled smile back at her. Sheriff Brown looked down and shook his head back and forth once again. He thought this family was too proud about some things, but today he admired them for their strength of family love and loyalty. He knew now that Gregg Moore really had his work cut out for him. Jo Lee wasn’t going to budge. She would stick with her story no matter what the consequences would be.

About the Author
Victoria Simpson is a fifty-three year old novice writer born in the small southern town of Williamston, South Carolina, married with two grown daughters and five grandchildren. She works full time at a state hospital as a medical transcriptionist. She has spent all of her life in the southeast and attributes her love of this area to the warm, pleasant climate and the access to nearby beaches, mountains and the scenic beauty connected with South Carolina. Her book, THICKER THAN WATER, was inspired by another writer, Billie Letts, who wrote about similar unselfish characters. Victoria has always wanted to write a book but never had the courage, until now. She was encouraged by her family to fulfill her dream.
