It was late February, the air cold and brisk when Joe Thurston and his small army of people made it to Alabama.
"God!" Joe thought silently, while shaking his tired head. He let his breath out in relief. "We finally made it," he told BB. Then he commented heartily, turning smiling eyes upon her. "Well? What do you think? We're entering Enterprisejust as we planned, when we started out."
A smile forming on her lips, BB looked out the win- dow, and she nodded slowly, watching the buildings go by. She murmured slowly, as if asking a question. "I think you're right, in that we make camp outside of town. Perhaps with a field that in spring we can plant crops. What do you say?"
She turned his way, an eyebrow raised. She watched him closely, waiting for a reply.
Joe smiled fondly, listening. "You've got the same idea that I have," he whispered, glancing her way, only to return his attention back to the road.
Joe remembered the signs of battle along the way, a frown crossed his lips, while tightening his jaw together. He looked this way and that, for signs of fighting and war. He took note of the bare limbs on the trees, that bespoke of winter. He watched as the wind pushed the tops of the trees around, all the while hearing them crack loudly, do to the extreme cold air.
To their relief, they hadn't been involved in any battles. Joe reminisced, remembering the dead bodies. "God! They stunk so bad I had to hold my breath! The horrible sight took your breath away. It was ghastly!"
BB's lips turned down into a deep frown, as her gaze wandered around town. "Joe?" She murmured softly, turning his way cautiously, "What are we going to do about food? We're out of everything. We don't dare kill anymore animals." She watched him closely with frightened eyes, her posture alert and ridged.
His mind worked overtime as he tried to picture the remaining animals in their possession. "One boar.... Two sows that gave birth to litters ...... Sheep..... babies .....
Jesus?! ...... What else do we have?" He silently asked himself in bewilderment.
Joe voiced his thoughts, as he grumbled softly, just above a whisper, "We'll see what we can do when we make camp."
Then in a firmer tone of voice, he continued, "Maybe the towns people, and farmers can help us, in our plight."
They made camp outside of Enterprise, Alabama in a large field suited for their needs.
The people felt apprehensive, about the military base close by. The men watched the new women and children closely, so they wouldn't disclose what had transpired on the journey.
Most of the soldiers and equipment was gone, as the army was in battle with the Chinese.
As Joe's people were setting up their tents, curious towns people arrived. And with them, they brought the group up on the latest news.
"We listened to my military scanner, as well as my Ham Scanner. Shit!," the bald headed man exclaimed, shaking his head jovially with mirth. "You should have heard the news coming across my scanner!"
The man looked around him, at all the people ga- thered, a large bright smile busting across his lips, as his eyes shone. He wrapped his large arms around his over sized belly, as another loud laugh erupted from deep within him. "We even heard you, BB and the other woman, Lulu. Hell!," he bellowed mightily, "We weren't sure who we wanted to listen to more! The military, or you."
