In a crystal tower a female cuddled her chicks beneath her wings. Tears soaked the feathers around her beak. She preened them away with the hand-like talons at her elbow. Her mate had lost his life when the nest he was visiting crumbled to the ground. Warbling a high-pitched note, she brought the crystal door sliding into place. Others of her flock came to her, to give her comfort. They all squatted on the clear floor and closed their wings around their faces, fluffing up their feathers. She heard her chicks chitter, disheartened, and she reassured them. She slowed her rapid heartbeat and went into stasis. She, with her flock, would hibernate until the danger passed or until they were forced back to wakefulness. Fraarra did not want to feed her chicks the abominable creatures in the cellar. The strange, plodding aliens would soon leave in the dirty sunbird that had brought them in its belly. Soon the flock could hunt again. She would double her efforts to keep the gaping beaks of her chicks full without her mate to help. Her feathered lid shut over her golden eye and she went into her self-induced coma.

About the Author
Tish Hand works as a graphic designer at a t-shirt shop called Tee's Etc. in Enid, Oklahoma. She is an award-winning artist and has portraits worldwide. She tries her skill at everything and has accomplished classical guitar, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, mechanics, computer technology, monogramming, and creating pageant dresses for her granddaughter. Her hobbies include singing karaoke, playing Tomb Raider, and boating with her fiancé, Larry Humphrey. The boys usually come with them. They are Chewy, a Lhaso Apso, who is the boss, and his bigger, younger, but not wiser companion, Mojo, who was saved from road kill by Larry while going down a local highway. Widowed after thirty-two years of married life, she has three grown children, and four grandchildren, all of whom she is very proud.
