The desperate figure came flying over the fence and turned into a human cannon ball as he hit the ground. He did two complete rolls then unfolded his short, serpentine bulk and melted into the sparse forest surrounding the fence. It happened so quickly and quietly that if you had been looking any place but there you would have missed it. He sprinted a hundred yards away from the fence, made an abrupt stop and quickly unrolled a bundle tied to his waist. It was a camouflaged poncho with an inner layer of foil he had laboriously hand stitched to the lining. He was gambling it would conceal the heat of his body until he got out of range of the infrared sensors. Under the waning light of a full moon it was no trouble to find the foot of the deer trail and he began his tortuous climb to freedom. * * * * * "Commander." The low voice was urgent enough to raise him from sleep. "Yes?" "A million pardons, Honorable Commander but we just finished 3 a.m. bed check and G-101 is missing." Senior Colonel Pak Pong-Yul tweaked the light switch and confirmed the time. "Is he in or out of the building?" "Definitely out, sir." "That is confirmed?" "Yes sir, the alarm system was compromised and the door was forced." "How about the grounds?" "I have three squads checking the compound now, sir." "Anything on infrared?" "Negative" "That’s curious, how about the rest of Dr. Ho-Sik’s subjects?" "Everyone else accounted for, Sir." "I shall be there shortly." "Yes Sir. Does The Commander wish me to sound a general alarm?" "No."
