Rinky fell back asleep, and when he woke up again, there was no Mommy--no brothers--no food. He had to go look for them! He knew he could find them! He knew that he could help! He started on his journey, struggling with his tiny leg, to find his family. Rinky walked for hours and hours and hours. He was so tired, so thirsty, so hungry. He was going to cry, but he knew he must be brave and strong to find his family. Just then, Rinky felt a warm pat on his wrinkled head, and he stretched his neck up to see the kindest eyes he had ever seen. (Next to his Mommy’s, of course). This lady scooped him up, looked him right in the eye, and rubbed noses. "What do we have here", she asked. "Poor baby, what happened to this little leg?" Her voice sounded like an angel’s to Rinky. "I’m so hungry," Rinky barked. "I bet you’re hungry and thirsty," she said. "Well, let me get you to my house and we’ll work on filling that belly and finding your home". "But, I have no home," Rinky thought and I’m looking for my family. "There, there", she said. "Just cuddle up in my arms and close those eyes. We’ll be home in no time". Rinky felt so safe and warm in her arms that he fell right to sleep. (Have you felt safe and warm–maybe in your bed or sitting on your Mama’s lap) Draw a picture of that.

About the Book
Rinky is Born
Throughout this story, children are asked to interact with Rinky by drawing pictures of how they see themselves in similar situations. Dealing with feelings and facing their fears through art, with the help of this little dog, is the main focus of this book.
About the Author
Ellen was a shy child who had difficulty verbalizing her feelings of inadequacy. Feeling less than perfect in a world based on perfection, she turned to writing as a tool to deal with her lack of self worth. When Ellen had children of her own, she realized how important art was in helping to deal with the emotions of growing up. Her idea of using a story of a handicapped dog to help guide children through feelings experienced on a daily basis, was brought into reality with this offering. Her ultimate wish is to help children feel special and "perfect" regardless of their obstacles.
