Oh, the last picture is just me and Waddles. It was taken around Christmas time. You remember when you brought him home to me? That was my birthday present when I turned nine. He was just a little poodle then, and could sit in the palm of your hand. I still remember how you had a little ribbon tied around him and set him on the kitchen table to surprise me. Then he peed all over the paper plates cause he was so scared. Mom was furious! So was Peggy, only I think she was more jealous than anything else. I don’t know why though. Ned used to buy her special things all the time and it didn’t bother me. After all, he’s her dad. He’s supposed to do special things for her. But anytime you would do something special for me she would pout and throw one of her temper tantrums. She still hates Waddles. He’s not real fond of her either. Whenever she comes around, he growls at her then goes and hides under the bed until she leaves. I think she used to do mean things to him when I wasn’t around and he remembers it. Of course, he’s old now. I think he’s going blind cause he’s always running into walls and furniture. He still likes it when we go for walks. Do you remember when you got me the kite and took me to the park? Waddles was still a puppy. He chased the tail of that kite all over that big mowed lawn! Do you remember that? Do you remember when he got a hold of the end of it right when it was catching the breeze? It picked him straight up in the air! He was still so small and light, but his eyes got as big as saucers and he gritted his teeth, scared to let go. I laughed so hard my sides hurt. You saved him before the thing really took off or he might have become the first puppy astronaut. Anyway, do you know he still hates that kite? He won’t go near the thing even though it’s been in my room all these years. If I take it down to dust it or rearrange the furniture, he growls at it and then hides under the bed the same way he does whenever Peggy comes around. I don’t suppose you have any way of getting a picture taken in there. I still have lots of pictures of us from when I was little. Maybe if I brought a camera to the visit we could get someone to take it of both of us. I can hardly wait until I see you. Until then, be careful and remember I love you. About the Book
Sophia, a girl in her late teens, is estranged from her father because of her twice-divorced mother’s deceitful and manipulative ways. She manages to re-establish a relationship with her father in spite of her mother’s objections. Her dysfunctional family consists of her neurotic mother; Jack, her stepfather; and Peggy, her promiscuous older stepsister. Living in Peggy’s shadow has been difficult for Sophia. Her father reveals a secret about her true identity, which explains the obvious differences between the stepsisters. Clutch, Sophia’s boyfriend, gives stability to her chaotic life.
