About the Book

Who Was Who in Orthodontics is the culmination of some fifteen years of researching orthodontic history. Books, journals, newspapers, manuscripts, newsletters, and oral histories were culled for information to build the most complete collection of references yet available.

This book consists of two main features: (1) biographies of more than 100 individuals important to orthodontic history (Part I) and (2) references to the literature of orthodontic history covering a 100-year span (Parts II and III).

No longer does the researcher need the date of death to locate an obituary, because the entries are arranged alphabetically, in a style that permits quick access to the significant features of the individual’s life. Each entry is followed by additional sources of information, if amplification or verification is desired.

The history references are arranged both by subject and by author, and are not limited to the three- or four-decade window currently imposed by on-line sources. Although hard copy sources are not thus restricted, they can be accessed only on a year-to-year basis.

Finally, a list of "firsts" can be found in Part IV, for those who like their orthodontic history in a capsule.

About the Author

A native of Chicago and a West Point graduate, Norman Wahl was commissioned in the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps. After three years of service, he worked in the film studios, later producing two documentary films on the history of Los Angeles. He finally decided on a career in dentistry, specializing in orthodontics.

In addition to a BS degree from the U.S. Military Academy, Dr. Wahl has a DDS from the University of Illinois College of Dentistry, an MS in orthodontics from Northwestern University, and an MA in history from California State University at Northridge.

He has written for the military and lay presses as well as for dental publications (mostly on orthodontic history). He is the author of Oral Signs and Symptoms, Wahl’s Oral Histories, and articles in the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, The Angle Orthodontist, the Journal of Clinical Orthodontics, Dental Economics, and the Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontists Bulletin. He has taught orthodontic history at the UCLA College of Dentistry. At present he is historian of the Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontists.

Dr. Wahl lives with his wife, Betty, in Sequim, Washington, and divides his time between orthodontic practice, writing, and freelance copyediting. Who Was Who in Orthodontic History seems a natural outgrowth of his experience in orthodontics, his compulsion for orderliness, and his love of history.
