"Oh, well, I’m here now," she said firmly. She glanced out of the front window. "Shouldn’t your father be here by now?" "I suppose it depends on what he found. If he can fix it, he’ll do it before coming back. Look, there he is." The monstrous truck roared up to the house and Chase climbed out. He stomped in their direction. His jet black eyes surveyed his daughter and then Jade. "Are you ready?" he inquired. "I have the spare parts that should fit your Jeep. I can fix it and then I’ll follow you home." "I can manage on my own," she replied. "But thanks for thinking of me. How much do I owe you?" "Nothing. Consider it a friendly gesture given in return for your interest in my daughter. And we will follow you home. I don’t want to be responsible if you don’t make it off this mountain." She sensed he had made up his mind and she thought she saw that reflected in his granite expression. "Ready?" Jasmine asked. Chase glanced at his daughter. "Finished with your talk?" The girl nodded. "Yes." She met her father’s gaze directly. "She’s convinced me to return to school and she promised to help me catch up. I’m going to try to go to the University of Arizona." "It’s up to you. Just make sure that is what you want and not what someone else wants." "I want to try." Chase nodded and the discussion ended. With both of them flanking her, they left the shed, and once again Jade was struck by the fierce humidity. She quickly climbed into the truck. Air conditioning would have been a blessing but a quick scan of the instrument panel told her it was not to be. Chase took the wheel, and Jasmine got in beside her, trapping her between them. She sat quietly with her hands folded in her lap and her feet firmly on the floorboards. They drove to the shed beyond the barn where Chase quickly collected the parts he would need for the repairs. When they finally reached her disabled vehicle, both father and daughter got out and poked their heads under the hood, but Chase instructed her firmly, to remain safely in the truck. He was certainly chauvinistic, but she liked his relationship with Jasmine. There was a strong father-daughter bond there. She couldn’t help but wonder if the local residents were really resentful of the Nighthawks because they were of Native American decent. Something about her conversation with Jasmine tugged at her memory. What was it she had said? It would be bad enough for her to work with her but even worse because her Dad was around. What did that imply? He’d taken her into his home when she was stranded in the heat and now he was being a good neighbor and fixing her Jeep. He had also taught her how to kiss. She could feel herself blush at the memory. She felt her body radiate heat just thinking about it. She was flushed because her own behavior had been so unlike her she could hardly bare to even think about it. She had never in her life conducted herself in that way with a man. What had possessed her?

About the Author
Debbie A. Heaton has had a lifelong love affair with reading, which naturally led her to pursue writing. She is an eighteen-year veteran of Social Services. Her career has included time spent as a substance abuse counselor, a case manager for the seriously mentally ill population, and most recently, she has provided a violence prevention class to her community. Texas born, Debbie has spent her life in the Southwest and this is reflected in her writing. She is a member of the International Womens Writer’s Guild. She resides in Arizona with her daughter and a calico cat that adopted them. She enjoys reading (what a surprise!), photography and she has a tremendous respect for nature and wildlife.
