HEADS OR TAILS?
Cycles of happiness, cycles of pain,
cycles of honor, cycles of shame,
cycles of victory, then of defeat;
round and around again – is there no peace?
But would we know health if we never knew pain
(two different sides of a coin that’s the same
whose value is centered between heads and tails -
is always deemed precious and never fails)?
So be not be dismayed when the coin’s in the air –
the proof of its worth is always there
right in the middle where opposites meet
the odds may choose sides but the value stays even.
TORCH BEARERS
There is the flicker of a flame in every one of us –
a gift that God has given with a purpose for its use
and the world is full of challenges that beckon us to rise
from little to the fullness of fulfilling who we are.
Look within yourself and know the torch that you will bear;
then hold it high before you and follow it to where
it leads to your Olympus where alone you must decide
if you will climb its heights to add your flame unto its fire.
The path is long and lonely with the peak oft’ out of sight;
the bush is often thorny and the wolves howl through the night;
but this torch is eternal fed from your internal flame;
somehow it burns a path through thorns and keeps the wolves at bay.
Have faith in that within you (if it’s good, it’s good as gold);
build strength of body, strength of mind, and purity of soul;
then bear it to the highest height where everyone can see
it is the place, the only place, where everyone should be.
May the road rise up to meet you, may the wind be at your back,
may the rain fall soft upon your fields, soft on the beaten track;
and till the time we meet again may God’s almighty hands
protect the flicker in your heart of His eternal flame.
