It was a day in early May when the door burst open in the office lobby of the print shop, and there stood Mike in front of my eyes. I couldn't believe my own reaction to seeing him again. His presence filled the room. It was like that first day I'd laid eyes on him. No one, nothing else ever looked better to me. My heart stood still. Then it burst. Mike leaned over the counter, placed his elbow on it to hold his head, while he searched my eyes as they met his. I knew in that instant, that whatever we shared was still there. I knew in that instant, as he gazed into my eyes, they told him what my lips had not said. I knew in that instant, that nothing else in this world mattered, Mike was here. Out of the corner of his eye, Mike caught a glimpse of the calendar on the wall. He turned to look at it closely. The picture was of two Indian men sitting on the floor of a ti-pi, preparing for the hunt. The painting was entitled, "Hunting Song" and the names of the men were listed below: Bawling Deer and Hunting Son. A local paper company had reproduced the work on its annual calendar. It impressed Mike and he was obviously pleased with what he saw. He appreciated any acknowledgment of his people. Dancing eyes again found mine, and feigned French accented words enticed me until I melted. He teased and taunted, flirting shamelessly, while I basked in his love. This was a new beginning for us. We would go to the upcoming pow wow together. We'd have time together now. Whatever the future held for us, we'd face it together. Mike was home! We talked for as long as I could get away with there at work, taking my break spontaneously to visit with him. And when he had to leave, I walked him out to the parking lot where his family was waiting in the car for him. I watched as he climbed into the back seat of the car, folding his long legs into the small space somehow as he sat between his nieces and nephews. He introduced me proudly to his two-year-old niece I'd never met before. She was a little doll. His sister, Melanie's little girl. We said our good-byes with the promise of a new beginning between us. I waved until the car was out of sight.
