The Man I Never Knew
In a land far north of mine,
There lived a man I never knew,
This quite man lived among many,
Was skilled in his trade,
And wise in other ways.
This man, simple and quite,
Lived his life and loved his wife,
He loved the sea and the stars above,
This man, who I never knew,
Did a most remarkable thing.
He lived his life, simple as it was,
Raised a family and built a home,
He laid the foundation of a life,
That the world would little notice,
This life grew on these stones he laid.
She loves her father in his life and now,
I will never meet this quite and strong soul,
Fate is always surprising; I have meet him now,
As if we sailed frequently, sharing our lives,
For there he is, smiling deeply in her eyes.
By the stories she tells,
The lessons she shares,
By the content of her character,
The gentleness of her song,
I know the man by the love in her eyes.
So this is to thank the man I never knew,
A hand I could never shake and say thank you,
For this simple man did a wonderful thing,
He lived his life simply and well,
And raised the woman who I love.
This Sailor
Remember sailing the oceans,
Long periods of time alone,
The sun bearing down,
The moon rising,
Air so crisp and pure,
It burns your lungs with freshness.
Hear the cutting rush of the sea,
As the bow buries down,
The sea is peeled back off the bow,
I remember these days well,
Sun baked skin,
Tired but happy arms and limbs.
A deep sense of accomplishment,
This is nothing when compared with,
The sighting of my port of call,
Happy is this troubadour,
Not in the trip or toil but knowing,
My bow is pointed towards you.

About the Book
Tears from the Heart is written by one of America's newest romantic poets. Drawing from life experiences, Howard's work displays our complex world and experiences in terms of harmony. From the "Morning Dew" to the experiences of "This Sailor," the author has taken the toil and conflict that modern living creates and reminds us of what is truly important today.
Inside this book you will see poems of the pure love of a man for his wife, honor and respect for one's mother, father, brothers, sisters and children. You will also feel the conflict and pain that life sometimes affords and how they are conquered by love. The author is not limited to only these topics but also relates his work with deep respect and appreciation of our national heritage and grieves for recent the events of the attack on the World Trade Center. After reading Tears form the Heart you will be reminded of what family should be and why it is important. You will read it again and again.
About the Author
Howard has had a variety of experiences. Some of which are unique, some fairly commonplace. Raised in Durham, North Carolina attending Northern High School and North Carolina State University, in Raleigh. His formal education centered on anything but literature and the 'arts.' Howard has taught high school, worked in engineering and management and owned his own business. He currently works in Information Technology and lives with his wife (Janet) in central Florida. Their five children are grown and living their own lives in North Carolina and California. Howard and Janet are the proud grandparents of two. As clearly seen in his work, Howard has spent extensive time sailing in the Atlantic Ocean, which he enjoys most of all other than being with his family. Other experiences include flying, amateur radio, home repair, volunteer paramedic.
His poetry literally comes from life experiences. He never sits down and says, I am going to write a poem. They come to him, inspired by events and how he has seen his family and world.
Howard is currently working on a historical novel set in World War I and Manfred von Richthoven (a.k.a The Red Baron.)
