As I got closer I realized for sure there was something in the trail. It looked like 3 or 4 wolves or bear to me. Suddenly there was a loud growling grunt and the critters jumped off the trail into the brush. I about froze, I got so scared I dropped my flashlight but still managed to slam a round into my rifle. I started talking loud as best I could but was so scared I wasn’t making much noise. I just knew they were grizzly out early from their winter sleep hungry as hell and coming to eat poor little old me. I backtracked all the way to my truck anticipating an attack all the way. I was real happy when I got back to my truck; I crawled in the back and rolled up in my bag to go to sleep. Only after being in there about 15 minutes did I finally calm down, it had been one hell of a grunt. *** One afternoon I was sitting in my shack reading and drinking tea when I heard Egor my adopted squirrel chattering his head off about something. I went out to see what was going on, there 20 feet in front of my door was a beautiful marten. The marten is a member of the weasel family; they have nice dark brown fur and are trapped heavily because of it. This one was on the side of a tree looking right at me. He or she didn’t seem to worried about me and nonchalantly came down and grabbed a wing of a grouse I had shot a day or 2 earlier.

About the Author
Harry J. Roehrig was born and raised on Long Island in the state of New York. He had a wonderful childhood playing sports and games with his many friends and family members. His love of nature lead him to Alaska after high school, where he has made his home for the last twenty-six years.
