About the Book

Have you ever asked why your company is unable to hire the talent that it needs to be successful in your market? Have you wondered why the cost of hiring is so high? Have you ever found yourself staring down the barrel of a job search and thought that the first step was to pick up the phone and contact a local headhunter? Have you gone on interviews only to find you had no interest in the company or the position?

If you have asked these questions, you should read this book. Its purpose is twofold. It will provide clear step-by-step guidelines to be used by companies in finding and hiring the best talent in the most cost-effective way. It will also help professional candidates who are beginning a job search find the best company for their particular talents and interests and most effectively use the resources at their disposal. Both parties will be more fully informed as to the rewards and implications of using outside services in their search. This information is designed to help both companies and candidates make more fully informed decisions in the search process.

Intelligent Search is a compilation of over 15 years of recruiting experience and provides a cram course in what to do and not to do during a search. In order to allow more direct access to the two separate audiences addressed by the book, it has been written in two parts. Part One will address guidelines for any company that wants to conduct an Intelligent Search, and Part Two will provide information for the candidate beginning an Intelligent Job Search.

Part 1 includes an explanation of all hiring resources including personal networks, employee referrals, newspaper advertising, internet research, agency hiring, and retained/executive search services. It will clearly detail the advantages and disadvantages of each of these hiring sources. Part 1 will then look at when and how to build an internal recruiting team, what to expect of them, and the pros and cons of this decision. The audience that will benefit most from Part 1 of the book will be anyone involved in hiring professionals within any organization, including managers involved in the interview process. It will, however, also prove informative for any candidates conducting a job search who would like to understand the process from "the other side".

Part 2 is intended to outline some serious considerations for any candidate beginning a job search or career change. Looking for the right position requires the same skills as being a private investigator. Much of the initial work is research. While this book will not discuss how to write a resume or how to write a cover letter, it will include an explanation of all options to consider in starting a job search. It will detail the advantages and disadvantages of each option including personal networks, employee referrals, newspaper advertising, internet research, agency hiring, and retained search firms. This book will look at when and how to use outside agencies or services to aid in a search and the pros and cons of this decision. Part 2 is mainly intended for candidates looking for a career move or a new job but since any hiring professional within an organization is also a candidate at some point, it offers a friendly reminder of what is going on from the candidate perspective.

The book will also discuss the interview process at length from both company and candidate perspective. It will outline what are the most logical steps that are often overlooked during the interview process. It will explore how to be most successful in the offer negotiation phase. This is a must read for any company with extensive hiring demands and for any professional who has ever conducted a job search.
