Given my thirst I ask more from life than many other birds. Therefore my wants are greater and my excited spirit can only yearn for ascent. Instinct is not a way of living but rather a reflex mode of protection to sustain life amidst harm. Yet in your criticism of the noble life you offer only gloom as a substitute. You would have youth value laziness as an existence void of life’s stimulating challenges. Love and life should be compatible not viewed in ugliness and despair. Nor is the esteemed sacred ascent of flight capable of being gutted by mere innuendoes inferring that all tomorrows will lack challenging fulfillment and rainbows. In your negative hooting there is ample noise but little substance. You claim to posses great wisdom about life and to know what is best for youth. Yet in darkness veiled with selfishness you isolate yourself from life. Also you do not seek flight in care of the young that through them a better tomorrow might be realized. For in self-pity you aspire to neither love nor responsibility. Remember Bobby that change must first come from the heart. Because of your covert style of living and behavior associated with mice even some of your relatives have grown horns. However it is not my purpose to judge you or them. Or to make claim that in view of my own flight that I am in any way superior. However it does remain Bobby, that for the most part, you will receive from life just about what you contribute to it. Perhaps you are correct in concluding that there is little beauty regarding the circumstances of a prey being ripped apart. Yet in most instances of this nature, death comes quickly. In addition a just purpose is served when a life becomes lost to sustain another. Nonetheless little in life is as ugly as a negative attitude. You and all life are a gift of the Great White Eagle’s love. Even your keenness of vision that reaches far into the night represents his graceful attention to your special needs. When you cease to look down on life, and begin to glance upward through your own caring, you also will realize the fulfillment of dreams. In humbleness it is not wrong that you serve yourself. Essential needs are basic to survival. However broaden your scope of perspective beyond yourself and the obvious horizons. Envision the needs of others. While you are young, set your wings in pursuit of knowledge. For even an owl as wise as yourself to grow must flourish amidst new ideas. Be practical in your approach to life and apply sound reasoning. Never hasten your hooting. It's not only a reflection of poor manners but prudence may escape your pursued flight. I cannot foretell if peace will follow upon all of your flights. For the gentle breezes of life are often elusive. Notwithstanding knowledge is the embodiment of success. Through increased understanding I believe that a renewing sense of esteem will come unto you. Also in your loneliness turn to the Great White Eagle. Everyone needs a friend and he will not betray you. "It is through your thoughtful caring Eric that your spirit reveals the nobleness that has touched my heart. Being a curious owl much knowledge has come to me through the years. However my wisdom has been without purposeful flight. Frankly in my perching I have been on the sideline of life. In want of opportunity I have mistakenly expected the world to come knocking upon my door.

Maturing is difficult in a social world that demands conformity. Many who strive to succeed are often subjected to ridicule and conflict. Yet in spirit they envision a deeper meaning of love and seek a higher plane. Such is the journey upon the wings of an eagle named . . . Eric. In journey, Eric feels lost without sanction from either the world at large or heaven above. The storms seem severe and unending. Due to impatience he learns the hard way that the mere fluttering of wings does not yield purposeful flight. Often the young in life are swept up in storms of peril. Many do not even reach adulthood. Yet, others seem spared as if destined through struggle and blessing to serve a more noble purpose. Upon their wings rests a standard of aspiration for all to follow. Thus while there are many birds of a feather only the eagle is spirited in search of excellence. His flight is not of superiority as a sole utopian vanguard. But rather he identifies with those in life who strive for the treasures of the heart upon the breeze of graceful flight. Each of us attempts to avoid life’s storms. However we cannot elude the rains which fall upon all. Yet there are rainbows and love’s shining to guide our way. Eric’s flight in life ends much differently than it began as an eaglet. Endeavor to learn the true wind beneath your wings.

Larry Slauson resides near the coastal waters of North Carolina. He is a veteran and a former teacher of history and philosophy. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Upper Iowa and his Master of Arts degree from the University of South Dakota. Larry is a bachelor whose romantic interest focuses on the American Civil War era. He is presently finalizing four other novels about this great tragedy. One of the stories reflects his personal interest in boating and the sea.
