"If you place a pebble in my hand from the stream, you will be as one of us, and if you fail, you must leave and not return." I agreed to his terms. With a few motions of Grey Wolf’s hands, there stood three smiling braves in front of me. As I looked down the line at the end, I saw the face of Black Hawk. I smiled, "So this is where you rode to in such a hurry." Black Hawk answered, "I came to marry; and to watch the fun. I will stop you, Spirit fist." We both smiled. I said, "Deer, there is a centipede on your nose." They all turned to look and I made a run for the river. Even Black Hawk had fallen for it. I was about six feet from the water when Black Hawk kicked one of my legs out from under me and I turned into what I pictured must look like a rolling log down a mountain side. Someone tried to come in before I stopped and I felt my foot hit a body. I came to rest sitting in the water. By the time I stood up, all three were on me at once. One was on my back, and one at each leg. This was more like roughhouse wrestling than a battle, and it was just my style of play and I was going to bring that pebble back. Getting up, I staggered back and slipped on the slick bottom. Down we all went. Rolling over, I kicked free of the two that had my feet. The one on my back I knew was Black Hawk. He was trying to choke me out. I pried loose one of his hands by his thumb. He lost his grip and rolled off. Just then the other two jumped on my back. It felt like someone had dropped a couple of feed sacks on me from a hayloft. Then the third one piled on me. I was on my hands and knees in the water when I saw it. A white round pebble. I grabbed it with my right hand. It felt like three unbroken mustangs were on my back, and from the bank, it looked like I had stopped struggling while I was trying to get the stone.
Then Deer smiled as all three bodies started rising out of the water. Like a bear exploding out of hibernation, the three braves went flying through the air. As each one headed back, I grabbed them one at a time and threw them as far from me as I could over my head. Black Hawk was on my back again, but he was riding high. I reached back and grabbed him by the arm and tore him loose, then pitched him at the other two who were coming in again. Black Hawk started laughing as he hit the other two knocking their legs out from beneath them, all wallowing in the water. I made a mad dash for the shore, wiping the mud and water from my face. About ten feet from Grey Wolf they hit again. I grabbed one and held him like a sack of potatoes under my arm. Another was on my back trying to get me off balance, the other tugging at my leg. With all of this going on, I was dragging and carrying all three of them. Jumping and kicking and dragging, I slowly made my way to the Chief. The braves were all laughing and the whole tribe was whooping it up at the fun. I stopped in front of Grey Wolf, dropping one on the ground. The rest let go and stood to the side. Grey Wolf declared, "You must go, or try again. You have no stone." Smiling, I spat the pebble from my mouth and placed it into Grey Wolf’s hand. Opening his medicine bag, Grey Wolf dropped the stone into it. The tribe all broke into yells as Grey Wolf clasped my hand in his and with his knife, he cut a slash across both of our hands, pressing the cuts together and said, "It is good to have such a warrior as you as a friend and not an enemy. You are as wise as you are strong. Are you a normal man, or are you different?" I answered, "I am just a man as you all are, but my heart is different than many men. I try to listen to the spirit that guides me, not to the darkness that is in all our flesh." Grey Wolf nodded, "I have never heard that from your people. They have dark hearts." I said, "Not all do, but most find it easier to follow than to lead. Please come, I must speak with Grandfather." All the tribe walked with me and Deer to a lone teepee that sat separated from the rest. Sitting beside a fire was Grandfather. I stopped before him. All were quiet to hear what I had come to say.
