Harlin Holt and I never left our desks but almost the minute our leader went out the door we began to entertain our classmates with humorous allusions to giant cats complete with appropriate catcalls. My accomplice and I actually tried to outdo each other with our ridiculous antics. Looking back, I am sure we thought we were really funny. Why I was being so reckless with my behavior and setting myself up for two possible beatings stays an enigma to me to this day. My actions were dumb and the best I can now attribute them to was the fact that I was twelve years old. But I knew better and it was not long before I had to face retribution and suffer my fate. For whatever good it did, I did not have to face the music alone. Harlin was convicted with me. When our teacher returned to our den of merriment she promptly asked if anybody had breached her admonition and dared to speak. With absolutely no regard for the entertainment we had provided and with near unanimity, every one of our colleagues pointed accusing fingers at Harlin and me. Suddenly reality caught up and I was jarred into a state of mental perplexity. Immediately, I was a twelve-year-old who needed a drink.

About the Author
Mr. Russell is a licensed attorney who has been actively involved in both politics and the theater. He performed in dinner theater before writing the hilarious comedy It Pays To Be A Lady. He also wrote Life’s Little Problems and co-wrote the Thurberish comedy Wishful Thinking. Each of these works has been produced on the commercial stage. In addition to the plays, Mr. Russell co-authored a romantic comedy screenplay entitled I Have This Friend Who Writes. Mr. Russell’s service in his state’s legislature and his participation in politics gave him the background needed to write "Affairs of State." Drawing from those experiences he has presented a story that is both realistic, informing and uniquely entertaining. Mr. Lawrence's newest work Never Accept Candy From Strangers Unless They Let You Ride In Their Car is an often hilarious collection of short stories and observations on a variety of subjects.
