After 9-11, most New Yorkers showed kindness to others. The atmosphere of those of us who worked by the World Trade Center was one of unity and love. However, there was still a segment of people untouched by the devastation we had experienced. In my neighborhood, I would hear the youth joking about the people who were running and screaming. The adults on the train were making light of the situation. Several Christians sounded like the friends of Job in the bible. They were sure that the group of people in the WTC had done something awful. I couldn’t believe the insensitive people around. But why was I surprised? Was it because this set of people was still behaving in the manner in which we had become accustomed? Was it because I couldn’t believe that people were so far removed from the Father that they could not have compassion for others? I imagine this was my very thought. However, in looking at all of this in retrospect. God does not want us to falsely change our behavior because we are in a crisis. When America comes back to God, it will be in spirit and truth. We can’t have situational love for God. We have to tailor our lives after righteousness to ensure we have a victorious life.
Some may argue that Jesus came to fulfill the law, which is a true statement. He had to come and redeem us because we were not capable of keeping the numerous laws. However, when you examine the New Testament we are still required to keep the commandments. Jesus spoke of keeping the commandants in the book of Matthew. The Apostle Paul speaks of the importance of the original commandments in the book of Romans.
The simple truth of the matter is we are better equipped to fulfill the requirements of the commandments because:
- Jesus had every excuse nailed to the cross with him. He endured every temptation as a man and came out with the victory.
- We have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour.
- If you sin, you can immediately ask for forgiveness and regroup.
- We have the Holy Spirit to guide, lead and protect.
We have the victory, when we follow all of God’s commandments and not the ones we think are most crucial to follow.
