Just the Beginning When Nicki got a fever that September of 1980, it was just a child virus; it did not have any other meaning. However, this fever just would not evaporate; it just kept hanging on until it was necessary to see her doctor. For the first visit, there was no indication of a serious matter that an antibiotic would not cure. You see, lupus tends to play with you. Soon, we thought the fever was gone. It gave us time to breathe. Two weeks after taking the antibiotics, Nicki was able to return to school as any normal get-sick, get-well child. She returned to her friends and classmates and to her gymnastics, music and kid- acting, which were the loves of her life. Weeks passed. Then one day in her gymnastics class Nicki’s fever returned. She fell from the bars that she tried so hard to conquer. Nicki explained, "I was tired and hot, and my arm hurt." I will never forget that moment the school nurse called me in a panic. She explained, "Nicki took a nasty fall from the gym bars." I replied, "How bad is she? Is she hurt?" "It is not just the fall. Nicki has a very high fever, and I found a large raised area on her arm. I think you should call her doctor right away and take her straight there." "I will," I replied, trying not to panic. I called the doctor’s office and hurried off to the school.

About the Book
Tragedy happened in 1980, and Nicki’s life took a turn that changed the lives of much of our family and close friends around us. We called it the evil generation gap, and that explains it all. It changed our future, leaving a scar so wide that no graft could mend the space that was displaced in our healing. It is an incurable disease. I thought, "It is not the hand of God. It can only be the hands of Satan – evil hands." I took from every event of our lives, especially mine, searching to find a reason or "the truth of things that had come." In my long search, you will see the point for my calling this thing the evil generation gap. It’s a long haul that I found touched not only my family, but also many families like mine. It affects many people of all ages. It does not have a generation. This story not only teaches you the life of lupus, it also teaches you that God plays a very important part in the life of a person dealing with lupus and the family and friends who are around them. Nicki’s doctors gave her a short time. When she was diagnosed with lupus, she was eleven years old, very active, smart and loved by all who knew her. God gave us much more time than was expected by her doctors and the medical staff who cared for her. As you take the time to read this book, you will see how illness can destroy, and destroy again, the lives of loved ones. In the still and peaceful night creeps the darkness that stands outside the doorway, awaiting the return of the beautiful smiling face of the one we hold so dear, and beneath that face is held a mound of pain.
