About the Book

You Will Play the Piano in Less Than 30 Days was written to accommodate anyone interested in learning how to play the piano, without having to attend a lot of scheduled classes.

The book is very simple. It is written to familiarize you with musical notation, notes, rest values, key signatures, scales, and chords. It is designed to get you started playing. The chords are played with the left hand and the melody with the right. The results may encourage you to consult a music teacher later.

About the Author

In 1957 at the age of twenty, Bill Chavis became interested in music during his tour in the United States Air Force while stationed at Fort Ethan Allen.

When he had weekend duty, he could not leave the base, so he and some of his fellow servicemen went to the music room at the Service Club. One of those times when they were just clowning around, one of the guys named Smitty, who was from Newark, New Jersey, told Bill he had a good voice and that maybe they should start a doo-wop group. And so they did. It was not successful, and later he was shipped out.

Mr. Chavis then went overseas and was stationed in England. There he continued his musical task. He began taking piano lessons, and finally got a four-man group together who called themselves "The Ambassadors." The group consisted of Friday (the bass), Byrd (the baritone and lead), Soto (the main lead), and Chavis (tenor and lead). They were together for a short time before Bill was shipped out again.

Bill’s tour was over and he returned home to New York. He later began studying voice and attended the 125th School of Music headed by Mr. Carr from New Jersey. Frankie Lymon and Baby Washington also had attended the school. Mr. Chavis later met and studied with Lawrence 88 Keys, who was a very talented musician and a very good friend. Keys encouraged Bill to continue studying the piano, which led to the writing of this book, You Will Play the Piano in Less Than 30 Days.
