About the Book

Brandie Comes to Live with Grandma: By Grandma are stories of experiences with a little free-spirited, silvery-gray, curly-haired, poodle-terrier who came to live with Grandma while her son and his family were living overseas. Some experiences are rather ordinary; some experiences are rather frightening. The stories demonstrate the everlasting love that can evolve between a pet and a human being.

Grandma made mistakes- and learned from them. In many respects, Brandie’s behaviors are reflexive of the way children often behave. Many experiences provide opportunities to teach about a pet’s response to what is happening to them and how one should care for pets. The teaching aspects become part of the stories.

The stories continue even after Brandie goes back to live with the grandchildren. The last story gives parents an opportunity to talk to their children about the ending of life- in their own way.

She grew up in a minister's family. First memories include the family dogs –one named Buster who was killed chasing a gasoline truck and another, a red-nosed red-haired hound dog named Jack Rover, who appeared at her family's home in the country soon after. He was a loving pet, but also a fierce protector. Dogs continued to be part of the family as she married and had children of her own.

Although she has been published in leading professional journals, it was not until she retired from university teaching and administration that she has engaged in non-professional writing. Brandie Comes to Live with Grandma. By Grandma is her first attempt at writing for children.
