Her memory was like an undulating puddle out of which nothing of distinction rose. Her mental hands dipped into it, again and again, to retrieve something known to her, anything--it was hopeless, everything had been ground up and mixed up in an incoherent, scrambled mess. Her mind had turned to alphabet soup. The thought amused her and she heard herself giggle, briefly chasing away the specters of ‘doom’. Where was her uncle? Where was Megumi Yama? They had taken his face and tried to persuade her to come willingly, or else. No, that was not the way it happened. It really was he, who had first come to her that night, wasn’t it? She thought it was but now with all that was happening she wasn’t so sure anymore. Why could she not move? She struggled hard against invisible constraints to no avail. They had already done something – something horrible! They had switched off her nervous system! Or had they removed it? She could not feel anything. "Shimatta!" she thought, "how stupid of me! How could I have let them trick me into taking my nervous system?" Again, the horror of the thought turned into a giggle and she heard the sound of laughter, only it was not coming from her throat. They knew her paltry remaining thoughts and they were amused. They laughed at her. Or were they laughing with her? She could not tell. As nausea swept over her she closed her eyes or thought she did. That made it worse. If she could only remember the words to the prayer-- Megumi Yama now blended in and out of the picture. He looked concerned and kind. She felt that he urgently wanted to impress upon her that something wonderful was about to happen. So why could she not feel wonderful? Why could they not tell her what it was? Why the big secret? Maybe it wasn’t so wonderful after all. But she trusted her uncle--she did--she did! They had come so far; they would not do anything to harm her. The promise! The promise said so ’--your body is protected, your heart is glad, no harm shall happen to your body--Yes! She was so happy that she remembered --she remembered! And Megumi Yama was there. His face close to hers, smiling a rare smile, when they laid her down and a white light descended, engulfing her body. The light ‘thickened’ and wrapped her like a fluffy blanket. For a second she had the funny thought that she was bundled up like a papoose and journeyed on her mother’s back. That feeling was most comforting. Megumi Yama’s hand reached out and gently touched her face as her vision faded and she entered the big sleep. Yes, something wonderful was about to happen.

About the Author
Henniker Keene’s background spans several continents and a wide variety of professional experiences. He attended Columbia University, worked as a technician in the field of experimental surgery at a large New York hospital but soon changed over to the business world. After two prosperous manufacturing ventures, he returned to school and earned a degree in naturopathy and the natural health sciences from Brantridge, England. In Maine he established a successful natural health center, which he operated until the forces of life urged him to return to his love of writing. In another novel, THE PERMANOX REDEMPTION, Keene takes the reader onto a riveting journey of karmic retribution and the heroine’s preternatural transformation.
