About the Book

Join the Conversation grew out of our own individual journeys and developed into a shared journey, both from the perspective of Johanna and Dorothy as women and as poets. The lynchpin of the book is our spontaneous conversations about poetry, about what constitutes the universal in us all and about the dualistic nature of life itself. We discovered that our poems connect from a variety of perspectives, whether that be about the power of love and evil, pain and joy or death and regeneration.

It is a book that feeds the soul’s need for reflection, participation in the communal conversation and contemplation about the mysteries of life. Above all, this book reflects a sense of hope and recognition that we pay homage to the ancients, who have left us the blueprint that affirms life on our fragile planet. Finally, our poetry is not a reflection of a specific theology, but rather an opportunity to explore and celebrate the ritual of life. It is the great Ah Ha!

About the Author

Johanna Fisher and Dorothy Smith are professional educators in the humanities/arts, having worked in faculty and administrative positions at college, high school and grammar school levels. Johanna Fisher currently teaches French to middle school students and is on the faculties of Canisius College and Buffalo State College. She dances professionally as well as sings soprano for Parkside Lutheran Church and concert choir. Johanna was born in Breitengussbach, in the former West Germany. Many of her poems reflect her life and experiences in Germany.

Dorothy Smith, Ed.D, served as faculty, English Department chair and Dean of Liberal Arts at Trocaire College and is currently on the faculties of Buffalo State College and the Consortium College Program of the Niagara Frontier. She sings professionally as mezzo contralto for Parkside Lutheran Church and concert choir, and serves on the staff of Ars Nova Musicians Chamber Orchestra. Beneath her formal education and love of literature and the arts, the well springs of Dorothy’s writing are found within the wonders of creation and the dailyness of human life.
