About the Book
This publication was written to awaken the citizens of the District of Columbia, and the nation into problems of the Nation's Capital. The Youth Gang Task Force has identified close to 200 gangs, crews, and mobs, in Washington, D.C. The Police department has stated that there could be as many as 40 crews operating in the city. The name Shadows Behind The U.S. Capital was originated to let everyone know that politics is not the only thing that's being talked about in the District of Columbia. Gang awareness is a very essential topic today in the United States, and especially in the Nation's Capital. Two articles in the Washington Post’s Metro section, August 30, 1997, referred to gangs in the district. These two articles were: "Testimony May Outlive Slain Man" (Section B, Page 1) "D.C. Man Gets 75 Years In Howard Student's Death" (Section B, Page 8) The gangs members involved in both incidents were listed by the Youth Gang Task Force as the most dangerous gangs in Washington, D.C. on August 25, 1997, prior to the publication of the article by the Washington Post. The Youth Gang Task Force is accurate in its gathering of information. In the last case mentioned. the student was fatally shot by a motorist because he was upset by the sound of a car horn.
