About the Book

Blue Skies-Limitless Horizons is a first book indeed.  What is remarkable about this first effort is the manner in which Miriam Green Madison makes use of modern printing techniques to realize her long held personal dream.

This slim volume is a testament not only to technology, but to perseverance and hope.  Perseverance got the job done leading to its completion.  Hope is the center of these poems.  Miriam Green Madison finishes what she starts.

She has lived through a time of turbulence and danger in one of the most oppressive communities in North America for Black people-Mississippi.  This is a state few Black Americans would have chosen to live in during the time Miriam grew up there.

Despite this, Miriam Green Madison does not seem to harbor feelings of fear or anger, bitterness or outrage.  These emotions do not show up in her poems.  There are no poems about men dressed in white sheets and hoods racing through the piney woods seeking to intimidate and bring harm to people like her.

Instead readers will find words of encouragement, gratitude, love and above all, hope.  They will find a concern for children and concern especially for those people who are less fortunate than they should be in our rich land.  There is heartfelt testimony for a faith in the God of Jesus of the Christian Bible.

Miriam Green Madison has not lived a protected or sheltered life.  She has had troubles aplenty of her own.  There is much more she can write about.  Ms. Madison has a poet's heart and sensitivity and, she says, she is always thinking of poetry.  She writes anytime, anywhere.  It is her nature to test and grow.

Although there are some flashes of true poetic beauty and brilliance in Blue Skies-Limitless Horizons, there are also in this book some uneven moments.

This book is just the beginning.  Here she has tested the waters.  She is now poised to go deeper into herself.  I am confident more books are coming.  Along with a strong sense of hope, Ms. Madison also has a drive to accept challenge and to be excellent.

Miriam Green Madison is a poet to watch

About the Author

Miriam Francis Green Madison is a child of Mississippi. Born in 1937 in Starkville, Mississippi, she was the second child among three of Minnie Lee and Leonard Green. She grew up in the shadow of Mississippi State University, a college she could not attend because of the strict segregation laws existing in Mississippi during her childhood. Nonetheless, she has made education a chief cornerstone of her life. She now possesses college degrees just short of a full doctorate from several institutions in Alabama and Georgia. These institutions include Stillman College, Tuscaloosa, Alabama; Fort Valley State College (Now known as Fort Valley State University), Fort Valley, Georgia and The University of Georgia where she has earned an Administrative Specialist Degree. Much of her success in education and in life, she attributes to a strong Methodist mother and a guardian angel in her hometown. She, a Baptist, was taken under the wing of a white Presbyterian woman who taught Bible classes at her school. This angel told her, "You’re going to college one day", and made good on the prophesy; aiding her progress annually with summer jobs.

Miriam Green Madison has served the public schools of her Middle Georgia community as a teacher and ended her 30 years in education as the honored principal of a highly acclaimed elementary school for inner-city children in Warner Robins, Georgia.

Retired, but busy as ever as an Adjunct Professor at one of her alma maters, Fort Valley State University, this child of Mississippi still continues to prove that she is also a child of promise.
