David found himself lying on the steps half way between the first and second floor of the mansion with his head on the young girl's lap. He looked up at her distraught face, her big brown eyes almost lost in a sea of tears. She seemed to be looking at him as though she loved him. Unable to speak, he could only continue to stare at her.
Grasping his head she pulled him closer and cried out, "Look at me, David, I'm Ann, your Gypsy Ann. Please don't leave me." Then as she faded from his view, he heard her faint voice. "Remember me. Look for me."
Gradually his view of her and the large chandelier above her faded and was replaced by a plain off white celotex ceiling with a small fixture containing one electric bulb. It was still dark out and he slowly realized he was in bed in the house where he was born. All he could think about was the dream he just had. David decided to go over the dream again from the beginning to try to make some sense out of it. It was the first time in many months he hadn't dreamed about patients or taking an exam in some strange classroom.
As he lay there in bed looking out his window at the stars, he tried to remember. Let's see, he thought, I was in this mansion. Or was it a hotel? I was on the second floor near the steps. There were about a half a dozen people on the steps and walking by me dressed for a party, perhaps a wedding. As I started to descend the steps, this beautiful girl with long dark hair stopped and smiled at me as though she not only knew me but loved me. I don't think she was anyone I knew, or reminded me of anyone I have ever known.
Let's see, what happened next? Oh yes, I was lying about half way down the steps with my head in her lap. I remember seeing her lean down close to me. It was hard to make her out clearly on the dimly lighted, foggy steps. What did she say to me? Oh, yes, "Look at me David, I'm Ann, your Gypsy Ann." I wondered why she was crying as she pleaded, "Please don't leave me." It was so difficult to make her out on the foggy steps, but then as she faded away she said, "Remember me. Look for me."
