About the Book

This book sorts out many misconceptions about food, toxicity, pesticides, cancer, pollution, biodegradability, and natural products. It is not written for chemists. It does not teach chemistry. It is written for all those who wish to better understand the world we live in. It will interest and educate the general public: students, teachers, media people, environmentalists, and average citizens. It might be shocking to those who hold many of the common misconceptions. But, to most it will simply be interesting and educational news.

The book’s positive messages show that the future is not grim. It is very bright. The common fear of "chemicals" is baseless. This information can help each of us to become more calm, confident and optimistic. After the public has a better understanding of chemical risks, the government can redirect its efforts. It can stop wasting money on very low risk areas and spend where it really counts.

About the Author

Alan Sweeney was born and raised in British Columbia, Canada; obtained a BASc (bachelor of applied science) degree in chemical engineering from the University of British Columbia. After working a year on vinyl upholstery research in Toronto, Canada; he resumed his education at the University of Washington. Two important changes occurred: he switched from engineering to organic chemical research which he found much more absorbing and he fell in love with and married a beautiful nursing student, Sally Lou Grant.

After obtaining a Ph.D., he was into a career in industrial organic chemical research focused mainly on consumer products plus the responsibilities of a growing family with three children and eventually four grandchildren. He was on the boards of PTA, Canoe Club, Homeowner’s Association and United Way.

His professional academic and industrial accomplishments include undergraduate scholarships, a graduate fellowship, about fifteen publications and one hundred patents (listed under W.A., William A., William Alan, and the preferred W. Alan Sweeney). The publications cover a wide range from infrared and ultraviolet spectroscopy to biodegradability of detergents and to BTX processing. (BTX stands for benzene, toluene and xylene, which are high-octane components of gasoline.) The patents also cover a wide range from detergents and soap bars; to plastics, fibers, paper and fuels; and even to shale mining. He gained the title of Research Scientist, is listed in several Who’s Who directories, and is a member of several scientific organizations.

He was one of the few countrywide experts on detergent biodegradability. He devised tests to measure biodegradability and made new detergents to pass those tests. He worked with the FDA and EPA government agencies to get approval for new chemical products. He was on the board of a local environmental organization, The Environmental Forum of Marin.

Now, in retirement, he has written this book based on his chemical knowledge and his very long involvement with environmental questions. No one asked him to. It was because he continued to see so much evidence that the media, government and general public misunderstand what chemicals are and how they might affect health and the environment. Many still are afflicted with what has been called "chemophobia." Dr. Sweeney believes this causes much needless fear and pain and sincerely hopes this book will help dispel those fears. And he hopes it will help reform many of the governmental priorities and regulations.
